The majority of users that use adblock software feel guilty about blocking advertisements because they know many websites are dependent of advertisements for their income. This appears from a report by Gladly, the company behind the adblocker Goodblock.

goodblock-2016-report-on-ad-blocking-2-638

Users of Goodblock can opt to see one curated advertisement per day, and with that one they support a charity. But 77% of the surveyed users still feels guilty about blocking advertisements, only 23% feels no guilt at all.

One third of the users surveyed also notes that they visit another site if a site only allows users that whitelist them. However more than half of the users, 56.8 percent, will still whitelist the site to contribute to the site’s advertising revenue.

Annoying advertisements are for about half the users the reason to install an adblocker. About 22% uses adblock software to speed up load times and about 16% uses an ad blocker because they hate all ads. Only 2.9% is concerned about privacy and therefore uses an adblocker.

Users who want to try Goodblock can get it here. So far the users of the software raised nearly $288,000 for charity.

Who are these people surveying anyway??  It must not be Adblock users, lol.  I have absolutely no feelings of guilt myself, only joy that I am not bombarded by these intrusive ads and pop ups using my blocker.

I don't feel guilty. I'll never click or buy from an ad so it's not like they're losing money off me blocking them.

This is something people do not know though. Simply allowing ads does not mean the site will get the money required to run the servers. A user has to specifically click on them ads for the sites to get money. If the user clicks way too much then the ads provider will blacklist that user. A person does not necessarily need to buy anything though. This also applies to nsane ads. But we cannot ask anyone specifically to click on them.

This is why ads providers want to track users too, so that they can understand what users will prefer to click on or buy. What they do not understand is that, one, people are not ready to compromise their privacy for their products and two, if they really want to track someone, giving them local ads is far more useful than giving people ads based on their internet usage. Locally targeted ads without tracking, if done properly, would be a great compromise between ads and privacy if you ask me.

The campaign is real. But it is not running right now. When we will be running it, you will easily get to know about it.
