Chase found guilty of six charges, awaits sentencing

 

 

 

A US federal jury found Steven W. Chase, 57, of Naples, Florida, guilty of running Playpen, the largest Dark Web child pornography portal.

FBI agents arrested Chase on February 19, 2015, after receiving a tip about the website from fellow foreign law enforcement agents in December 2014.

Law enforcement investigators discovered that the Tor-based website was running on a misconfigured web server that leaked its real IP address. FBI agents tracked down the IP to a US web hosting company and using its financial records found and arrested Chase.

The FBI continued to run Playpen servers for 13 days

The FBI then moved the Playpen website to its own data center and continued to run the site from February 20 to March 4, 2015.

FBI agents hosted malware on the server that after infecting the site visitor's computer would ping back to FBI servers with details about the user's real IP and other details that could be used to reveal his identity and location.

When it was shut down, Playpen had over 215,000 users and hosted 23,000 sexually explicit images and videos of children as young as toddlers.

Over 100,000 Playpen users visited the site after the FBI took control of it. FBI officials said they manage to infect and get details of over 1,300 Playpen users. The agency shared these findings with other law enforcement agencies around the world and indicted 137 suspects in the US.

FBI criticized for the way it handled the Playpen investigation

The case has sparked a controversy in the US because of the way the FBI deanonymized Playpen users and its secrecy around the malware it had used. Many suspects indicted in relation to this case are trying to have the evidence dismissed because the FBI doesn't want to reveal more details about the technique it used to gather its proof.

Chase now awaits sentencing for one count of engaging in a child exploitation enterprise, one count of advertising child pornography, three counts of transportation of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography.

The federal jury also ruled that he has to forfeit his house and any other monetary gains that derive from his criminal activity.

In December 2015, Playpen co-administrator Michael Fluckiger, 46, of Portland, Indiana, and moderator David Lynn Browning, 47, of Wooton, Kentucky, also pleaded guilty.

These are the people who ran the site but each state have diffrent laws on it so it depends some states  are more hard on it than others.  I think the max for piracy in The US is like 5 years ,10 in the UK now all that money laundering  and stuff they do could get them more time.

A lot of times they will put them in isolation and protect them if it gets out who they are  or the inmates will kill them .  There are many people in there with kids that will kill  them they already have life so they dont  care  . .

They always been above the law ,  They can come in to any city or state and take over ..Hover was so feared  that  even the Presidents in his day  would not challenge  him . They will get dirt on you by any means . The reason the FBI  was invented  was Local Law Enforcement  were not doing a good job  to began with . State laws do not apply.  This was a Federal Court and the punishment guidelines are the same in every Federal Court in every state.  Most states will bow to federal authorities in these cases because the federal government has more tools to use against them, such as taking their bank accounts, houses, and cars.  Usually pedophiles have a rough time of it in prison, because even murderers don't like them.  There are some crimes that even hardened criminals can't condone.

Arrest those who make crack / keygens and patches for commerical software... oh wait... that would mean sites like this would be taken down and you lot would end up in the nick / prison for all the illegal warez found on your computers... of which you could end up spending just as much time in said prison as those paedo's... ironic... now for the illegal activities of the FBI keeping it up and running for 13days to catch more... 1 word ENTRAPMENT.  2nd it is also ILLEGAL for any and i say ANY company / country to KNOWNING INFECT people's computers with malware.. so the FBI have broken the law themselves, in which case the prosecution of these VICTIMS, could turn on a dime, it wouldnt take much of a lawyer to SUE the FBI for breaking the laws of the country, after all they admit they used MALWARE TO INFECT PEOPLES COMPUTERS.. and the FBI people who kept up the site should also be arrested for hosting the site for those 13days..

The way i see it  the FBI  done a good job i dont care how they catch them  its one less pedo on the street. !
