AdBlock Plus Blocks Facebook's Ad-Blocker Buster: It's A Block Party!

Web advertising arms race intensifies

The makers of Adblock Plus (ABP) have already found a way to defeat Facebook's anti-ad-block tools.

An updated filter list for ABP will disappear web ads on Facebook's desktop site – including banners the social network said it would force people to see even if they are using ad-blocking tools.

Those ads are specially crafted by Facebook to circumvent ad-blocking plugins such as Adblock Plus.

The social network argues that it is balancing out the force-fed-nature of the ads by also giving folks tighter control over what information can be shared with advertisers and what topics the targeted ads will cover.

Now, thanks to quick work by its developer community, ABP will be able to block those new Facebook ads as well. The Facebook filter can be manually added to the list of blocked ads, or users can wait for a coming update that will automatically add the script. ABP says that update will be distributed automatically in "the next day or so."

"Two days ago we broke it to you that Facebook had taken 'the dark path,' and decided to start forcing ad-blocking users to see ads on its desktop site," wrote ABP head of communications Ben Williams.

"We promised that the open source community would have a solution very soon, and, frankly, they’ve beaten even our own expectations."

The move now puts the ball back in Facebook's court, leaving the social network to decide whether it will allow AdBlock Plus to carry on using its new blocking scripts or engage in a back-and-forth battle with the plugin over the display of ad content.

According a statement provided to El Reg, that is exactly what Zuck and company plan to do. The California web giant also warned that the filter will remove legit posts, too.

"We're disappointed that ad blocking companies are punishing people on Facebook as these new attempts don't just block ads but also posts from friends and Pages," Facebook said.

"This isn't a good experience for people and we plan to address the issue. Ad blockers are a blunt instrument, which is why we've instead focused on building tools like ad preferences to put control in people's hands."

Game on.

As opposed to punishing people on Facebook by tormenting them with insane ads and unwanted crap?

And... Facebook's braindead News Feed AI already does a good job of blocking posts from followed Pages, but apparently that blocking is OK.

Best way I found to avoid Facebook intrusions was to simply cancel & delete my facebook account.

Never had no use for it ,  Someone that knows me can call me on the phone if they want to talk to me ,  I have IM that dont belong to Google ,Facebook  , Microsoft  or yahoo that i use too talk to a few online. now days we have multi clients, we live in a age were we have so many choices  but the masses want to use  stuff  that harvest there data and show you ads instead finding a nice clean alternative . LOL  ABP  the Mafia of Adblockers  must be mad  at Facebook for not paying them no blackmail money . If Google or Microsoft seeps threw there crappy filters  noting is ever said because they pay Millions in blackmail money a year . Im not fan of Facebook or ABP both are companies out for power and money . corporate  greed!   Process eating crappy addons that  use up so much resources the best thing ever happen to browser was uBlock  now we dont to pay such a heavy price to block ads and not have to use a greedy rich persons software. :P

Who needs friends and pages involved in displaying ads? There are ad blockers that may be blunt but the most used ones are the opposite, basically user-friendly and allow for custom filters too, it's just people that decide what ads they want to see, if they decide to block all, instead of some, it's called choice, sometimes ads are made in a way that page content need to be removed in order to remove ads, that's Facebook's own implementation fault and you can't really blame the tools given for it. Can Facebook not understand that many people feel they give them enough with their own valuable data already? And that they have users that don't want to see any ads in their profiles or pages? Forcing will not work.

Does Microsoft ,Google ,Facebook or any other site or services care on the internet anymore?  No they they never have ! . I been on the internet  almost everyday since 2001 . Even back in the 90s when i 1st got online ever using someone else's PC ads and spyware was a big problem then it always has been. The internet runs off ads and spyware and the only things that changed now we have adblockers to block them and now OS software it's self  is starting to run off ads and spyware. If you want ad free socializing or anything you must pay a fee . People  who dont pay have to look at ads or try to figure out how to block them . this has never changed even before Facebook it was this way! I been running adblockers all the time since i switched to Firefox in 2006 . I even tried ablockers in IE before this some that were stop being developed  years ago. .

I've never made an account with Facebook and try to avoid it as much as possible. I don't get why people would want to join a site and give all their info to the NSA/GCHQ for free.

But  the point is All  Facebook has to is update and break ABP , APB  depends  on filters witch can be broke easy by someone  who has the money

Type in Firefox over on yahoo using ABP  and see if you dont see these ads

Facebook is going about it the wrong way instead of blocking users who use adblock witch can be got around,  make unblockble ads  is the right way of doing it. :)
