Users Report PC Freezes After Installing Anniversary Update

Inevitable. For a software of this size and complexity as the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, it stands to reason that there will be some issues during installation and use.

Ideally, there should not be.

But we don’t really live in an ideal world, do we?

So while millions have already probably installed this first major refresh of the Windows 10 OS, and millions more are installing, there are reports that some users have been hit with problems that have caused their computers to freeze.

And judging by the number of posts online, this is quite a widespread bug that has affected many PCs.

What is essentially happening is that machines are freezing all of a sudden after installing the AU, with crashes occurring at random moments after users booted into the desktop — these really are the worst kind of problems.

Some people have claimed that their PCs became unresponsive seconds after the got to their desktop, others are reporting it taking a few minutes.

This Reddit thread does provide an easy way to deal with the issue, that being installing the Windows 10 Anniversary Update using the Media Creation Tool and then performing the upgrade.

As explained:

“After that I inserted the USB flash disk into USB 2.0 port (3.0 have problems on some motherboards when booting from them), went to the USB flash folder, run setup.exe, chose ‘don’t look for updates,’ unchecked ‘help microsoft with blabla’ and clicked trough the install app. I chose keep all my settings and personal documents, let it proceed, pc restarted and after installation I’m running the windows 10 1607 with no freeze after 20 seconds after startup (I did multiple restarts to test it).”

Do keep in mind that this is an unofficial workaround, and it is not currently established that Microsoft is actually aware of these issues.

But it is certain that the company will be keeping a close eye on things here.

No such problems here, only shutting off takes a few seconds more, but the reboot goes faster then before the upgrade.............:D

I think this is already a traditional dirge. Do not know, no problems.

After all, like a funeral dirge.
