Batu69
The Windows 10 Anniversary Update was released earlier this evening, and I dutifully installed it so that I could write about any oddities that might pop up. Well, a number of oddities have popped up, and they're bad - really bad. The Anniversary Update does some really shady stuff during installation that it doesn't inform you of at all until after the fact. First, the Anniversary Update reinstalls Skype "for you", even if you had it uninstalled earlier, which in and of itself is a blatant disregard for users - I uninstalled it for a reason, and I'd like Microsoft to respect that. That in and of itself is bad enough, but here's the kicker: during installation, Microsoft also automatically logs you into Skype, so that possible Skype contacts can just start calling or messaging you - again, without ever asking for the user's consent. Imagine my surprise when I open that useless Metro notification center thing - whose button now sits in the bottom right of the task bar, right of the clock, even, and is unremovable - and see that Skype is now installed, and that I'm logged in. This is a blatant disregard for users, and I'm sure tons of users will be unpleasantly surprised to see Microsoft forcing Skype down their throats. There was an even bigger surprise, though: during installation of the Anniversary Update, Microsoft apparently flags Classic Shell - a popular Start menu replacement that gives Windows 10 a customisable Start menu that doesn't suck - as incompatible with the Anniversary Update, and just straight-up deletes hides it from your computer - again, without ever notifying you beforehand or asking you for your permission. Update: actually, the application isn't removed entirely - it's still there in the Program Files folder, but it's entirely scrapped from search results and the Start menu. Effectively, for most users, that's identical to removing it. What an incredibly odd and user-hostile way of dealing with this. You can see how the wording in the screenshot below is confusing regarding the removing vs. hiding issue. Classic Shell released an update to fix the compatibility issue detected, so I hope my settings are still there somewhere, because it'd suck having to redo all of them because Microsoft just randomly deleted a program from my computer hid a program, without informing me or asking me for my permission. It could've just disabled the program, prevented it from running - why delete hide it entirely? Are they that desperate to try and get me to use their terrible excuse for a Start menu? So, just in case you're about to install this update - Microsoft will force Skype down your throat, and may randomly delete hide programs from your computer without asking for your permission. Have fun. Article source
nsanelurker
haha, this is just standard W10 stuff major OS updates every 4 months or so that you're basically forced to install and that may reset your settings, add new ones that bypass your previous choices, remove/hide your programs and even break your system because of a new incompatibility how can anyone put up with this BS is beyond me... LTSB is the only way to go if forced to use Win10
BBs
Fk this update... I can no longer access my portable SSD after updating. It is displayed as "RAW". At least It still works on my notebook... I would have raged so hard if any data was lost because of a stupid Windows update... Ps.: My Windows activation is also gone and as we know the free update is over, NICE. davmil
Amazing that MSFT O/S now feels like a cheesy freeware program installing crapware & hacking systems during updates. How the mighty have fallen & we are the victims.
steven36
Switching from Threshold to Redstone you may as well clean install it and redo everything . Most likely you run into problems if you dont.. i been testing it every since Windows 10 Build 14393 came out i try to upgrade from a ISO on my Gateway it failed on reboot to update .. so i clean installed and it worked like a charm . Skype is nothing to remove its easy to remove with Powershell. . To uninstall it, simply run command: Get-AppxPackage *skypeapp* | Remove-AppxPackage

straycat19
This isn't a surprise. MS said at the start of win10 that they could/would remove programs they didn't want on the OS and install ones they did want. They made it very clear that your computer belonged to them so no one that agreed to this by installing it should now be complaining because they were forewarned. LTSB is the only halfass decent version and they will probably screw that up with the next release.
steven36
LTSB dont even have Redstone yet . when i was on TH2 my Dell sometimes BSOD it dont no more in Redstone ..It fixed it . not getting updates can be just as problematic as getting them . Its a two edge sword windows 10 is just a little over 1 year old ..I had issues in Windows 7 up tell SP1 came out and it took them a few years to even release SP1 . As far as they they own you're PC that's hogwash, you can use any O/S you want, it dont take but 20 Min to put a different one in.. Its you're choice. no one can force you too use it. I had alot problems on my Gateway with windows 10 once long ago those problems have been gone since th2 , I went back too windows 8.1 for awhile and used Linux on my gateway that just depends on you're model..and if they ever fix it ...Sometimes updating BIOS will fix it. Now i have more problems out of most Linux Distros like Ubuntu and Mint on my Gateway than Windows 10 funny how the tides turn . . I was glad to get rid of TH2 myself i dont know what was going with windows updates last month but darn they have been slow and failing .That's why i started testing RS1 before it ever came out. i hope next week when patch Tue is out they have fixed update issues .10 hotfix installed OK on RS1 for me via WU. The PCs in my house with Windows 7 were being slow at updates earlier this year . Last month it started in Windows 10 for some . You cant win for losing no matter what you use . Pete 12
Well, took me a night and a day, but its fine now ! Upgraded over previous version, lost a few things ( my good "old" clock is gone from taskbar, replaced with an ugly black calender/clock ), and lots of errors in Event-log, these took most of my time, solving them . But there are a few positive things too, can use Windows Defender together with ESET now ( second opinian scanner ) and my context-menu looks a lot better now. Booting in Win10 goes faster also, it was 10 seconds before the upgrade, its now 7 seconds , and this all with a clean event-log............. btw; surely hope they will wait a loooong time before upgrading again.... SPECTRUM
the Start Menu in Annyversary Build has changed a lot, so is normal that an outdated version Classic Shell will not work on it and Microsoft will disable it to avoid compatibility issue, so I don't see anything wrong on this. Karlston
As if users need any more convincing of who controls the Windows 10 features on their PC's... Hint: it's not the PC owners. Why doesn't Microsoft just remove Settings and Control Panel, and set things the way they want it? User: I don't want this feature. Microsoft: Yes you do, it's now enabled again! User: I want this feature. Microsoft: No you don't, it's now disabled again!

Hint: it's not the PC owners. nope, the PC is always in your control, you are who choose which OS will be installed in your computer. but the OS is software, this software is private, the owner of this private software is M$, and M$ can change the design, the options, etc, and you can only play with the options available and configure it depending of your needs, like in this forum, when the owners changed from IPB 3.x.x to IPB 4.x.x and the design has changed completely, and guess ? we don't have control on that, we can't change the design or the options back to 3.x.x, we can only play with the options available and configure it depending of our needs. This is the beef I have with Microsoft, I use windows because it can run legacy apps and it served every ones needs fine for 40 years Now they think they need to mess it up by putting windows phone apps and stuff people dont want in it ..Before Windows 8 and the store you didn't need to configure windows very much witch every version of windows gets more shitty .Windows 10 is a last ditch effort for Microsoft to try to make money on O/S software that everyone else gives away for free . They copy everyone else methods Mac OSX 10 never ending update cycle of number 10 and Google's data harvesting and ads . One day win32 apps may stop working and be replaced with the store witch other OS had for years and it want suit no ones needs at all . Software sites like nsanedown and app/game cracking will be a thing of the past no ones yet to crack anything from that store even... No one likes Windows phones so why would we want windows phone apps on our PC? They done lost billions of dollars on phones already that should have been a warning enough too them that there Desktop business is hanging on by a thread . Only 320 million users out of 1.5 billion wanted it for free .. And its not just about numbers anymore .Free OS upgrades. .Pirates and stuff people bought 5 years ago dont make them any real money today so that 90% marketshare dont mean shit and if they dont change for the better there going lose it to something else. The rest of the stuff like Games and better software would come one day but as long as they have bad drivers or no drivers. i dont look for no one to rush to Linux anytime soon XP is proof of that Linux only have a 2.43 percent marketshare and Windows XP that not had a update in 2 years 10.34 percent marketshare . Its took Linux 24 years to get that little bit of marketshare too it use to be way less. All OS not made by Microsoft numbers is growing since the release of Windows 10 though . if you look at statcounter even windows 7 looks to be growing again witch it will because no more forced updates . Linux Market has over doubled even since the release of windows 10, people are looking for alternatives now .Even Google is coming after Windows 10 now by porting Android apps to there desktop O/S . They already the biggest players in phones and everyone likes Android and by porting them too there desktop, they have done something Microsoft only wish they could do is port phone apps to desktop that people like.
