Windows 7 PCs with free OS upgrade are still available, for now

Many computer users have upgraded from Windows 7 or 8 to Windows 10 as part of Microsoft's free upgrade offer, which ends on Friday.

After Friday, holdovers who want to upgrade from Windows 7 will have to shell out US$119.99 to $199.99 for a Windows 10 license.

But for those who'd rather buy a new PC, Windows 7 laptops and desktops will still be available with the flexibility to upgrade to Windows 10 for free.

PC makers HP, Lenovo, and Dell have stopped selling PCs with home editions of Windows 7. However, they are still selling PCs, loaded with Windows 7 Professional, that can be upgraded to Windows 10 Pro for free.

Some people still want to buy new hardware with Windows 7, especially businesses evaluating Windows 10 for compatibility, usability, and other issues, said Mike Nash, vice president for customer experience and portfolio strategy at HP.

Most of the PCs HP is now selling come with Windows 10 licenses, but they can be converted Windows 7 Professional. Buyers will have to specifically select the Windows 7 Professional downgrade from Windows 10 when customizing a laptop.

Nash believes PC users -- especially in the enterprise -- will eventually want to upgrade to Windows 10, so HP is preparing them by providing a license for Windows 10.

Some people may opt to buy a new PC instead of buying a copy of Windows 10 for an old PC, Nash said. The Windows 10 Anniversary Update, coming on Aug. 2, has many enhancements like note-taking software and voice-based interaction that could spur people to buy new PCs with touchscreens, Nash said.

But there's bad news for existing HP customers with Windows 7 PCs who didn't already take advantage of Microsoft's free upgrade to Windows 10 offer. They will have to buy a copy of Windows 10 to upgrade their OS.

Sales of PCs with Windows 7 Professional pre-installed may end on Oct. 31, as outlined by Microsoft on its product lifecycle. Nash hinted that HP may abide by that deadline, and sell most PCs with Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 pre-installed starting Nov. 1.

HP is also still selling Windows 8.1 on laptops like the ProBook 640 G2, which is $73 cheaper than a laptop with a license for Windows 10 with or without downgrade rights to Windows 7.

Lenovo is now selling many ThinkPads PCs pre-loaded with Windows 10 Home, and users can select "Windows 7 Professional 64 preinstalled through downgrade rights in Windows 10 Pro" when customizing the laptop. That will cost $30 more than the Windows 10 Home option.

Similarly, many Dell laptops are selling with Windows 7 Professional pre-loaded, with a license of Windows 10 Pro so the PC can be upgraded. Some laptops, like the $329 Inspiron 15 3000, are a good way to get a cheap Windows 7 PC with rights to Windows 10.

Yes one of my PCs  are like this  my Dell, but I already upgraded  it to Windows 10  ..If i ever switch from Windows 10 i most likely will put Linux on because I can always use my ISO and put windows 10 back on it.  I'm to the point ether its Windows 10 or no windows at all . This is nothing New really when I bought my Vista machine after windows 7 came out they gave me free Windows 7 DVD trough  the mail. Also i put Windows 10 on that one and rolled it back so it can be updated too windows 10  if i ever need too.  Windows 7 to  Windows 8 was the version of windows were they did not  give it a way to anyone who bought oem Windows PCs after they came out.

I was  smart i got my Dell  while there  was plenty to chose from back in the fall   Windows 8.1 free upgrade  to windows 10 at a good price . Meaning  Dell supports  the drivers ,firmware and everything for windows  10.  A lot of people had problems  updating there dell to windows 10  but  i updated  and clean installed it without a hitch  I think  most problems were fixed when th2 came out.   :)

But fact is you can download Windows 10 upgrader for from Microsoft and put windows 10 on any 7 or 8.1 PC for free still..l now its just a program that does it instead of GwX  .

They still have these on the business site with newer models.  They  also have Windows 10 systems with a free downgrade to Windows 7 available.  In this respect Dell has all the bases covered.  Saturday I helped a friend order new laptops for her small business and she took advantage of some of these offers since she doesn't want Windows 10 on her business systems.

Yes a lot of people  not going upgrade  yet  in business , but i could care less what they use  ...Windows 10 is working good for me,  this is what matters to me and i don't even use Windows 7 as my main O/S since 2013. I bought a windows 8  PC then and updated to windows 8.1  In 2015 i bought a Windows 8.1 PC Now I updated both to windows 10 . Before i would use a O/S  that is 7 years old id go with a new Linux distro .  I still have one with Windows 7 i don't use much just for old programs .

You  can buy Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 Pro tell October 31, 2016

Microsoft's policy is to set the end-of-sales date for a specific Windows version two years after the launch of the version of Windows that succeeds it. Under that policy, sales of Windows 7 PCs should have ended in late October of 2014, two years after the launch of Windows 8.

But the tepid response of the market to Windows 8 led Microsoft to give PC makers a reprieve, allowing them to continue selling PCs with Windows 7 Pro installed. At the time, the company promised it would give a year's notice before changing that policy.

But Skylake will not be fully supported  on older O/S after July 17, 2018 you will be able to only  get critical  updates .

The following is a list of computer manufacturers (OEMs) who have identified hundreds of PC models with Intel's 6th generation of processors, also known as Skylake, that will be supported on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. Support will be provided until July 17, 2018 and its recommended that these systems be upgraded to Windows 10 as soon as possible. After July 17, 2018, Microsoft will continue to deliver all critical updates for these devices through the respective end of support dates. For more information regarding Microsoft's support lifecycle for Windows, please see the Support Lifecycle FAQ.

For each of the supported systems listed on the OEM pages, the OEM has committed to additional testing, regular validation of Windows Updates, and publishing drivers and firmware for Windows 10 on Windows Update which will help unlock the security and power management benefits of Windows 10 once the systems are upgraded.
