New Python ransomware called HolyCrypt Discovered

A new ransomware has been discovered by AVG malware analyst @JakubKroustek called HolyCrypt. This ransomware is written in Python and compiled into a Windows executable using PyInstaller. This allows the developer to distribute all of the necessary Python files as a single executable. 

 

The particular sample that Jakub discovered appears to be a development version used by the malware developer to test the ransomware.  Jakub also discovered that this version has a static password of test that is used to encrypt the files. At this time it is unknown if the password will be dynamically generated in future versions.

How HolyCrypt encrypts a victim's Data
This version of HolyCrypt will only encrypt files located under the %UserProfile% folder and will only encrypt certain file extensions. These extensions are:

.txt, .doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, .ppt, .pptx, .odt, .jpg, .png, .csv, .sql, .mdb, .sln, .php, .asp, .aspx, .html, .xml, .psd

When encrypting a file, HolyCrypt will encrypt it using the AES encryption algorithm and will prepend (encrypted) string to the filename. For example, test.jpg would be encrypted as (encrypted)test.jpg.

 

When done, it will create a alert.jpg file from a base64 encoded string contained in the python script and save it to the same location that the ransomware was executed from. This alert.jpg will then be set as the Windows desktop wallpaper and act as the ransom note.

From the test message in the wallpaper, this ransomware intends to use a TOR payment site for it's victims. If a TOR payment site is used, then there is a greater chance that the final version will not use a static key, but rather one generated on the TOR payment server. Unfortunately, at this time it is too soon to tell.

This is actually low end ransom-ware because of using only base64 for encoding the actual code.  You can input that so called encrypted code into a web site and get the full string.   This would not be hard to fix from cmd prompt outside windows OS.  Just my two cents from messing with python myself.

Well, where have you read it's a low end ransomware? Can you share the link? :dunno:

From what i understand from this article, they are encrypting your data with a dynamically generated key with AES, which i won't say to be low end unless you have some sort of a quantum computer to break it. base64 element is just the image which is set as your desktop wallpaper, you know that pesky image string like this on some websites:

Yes the data SENT out is with AES but you can still decrypt the basic base64 python code which is no encryption really at all.  If you read my post again you will see I never mentioned the data going out.  I am more concerned in understanding what the code does then get rid of all traces.  Please read my post above carefully and PLEASE dont put words in my mouth.  Do you even know python or any coding?  Do you know anything about reverse engineering?  If not then keep it to yourself and dont call me if you get this crap.  lol  Go home with your 93 post count.

hmm, considering that i might be working in offensive security domain for 7 years now professionaly, i'd say i know a little bit of python and coding. And you who consider someone with lower post count as inferior, shows your online mentality, like those guys who have 1000+ friends on some social media website considering themselves superior to others. First, data is not SENT anywhere as you mentioned, the ransomware runs on your machine, encrypts your file with a key, and then just gives you an option to pay to get that key.

Second, you can't DECRYPT base64, it's encoding, not encryption, you DECODE the data, but i don't think you know the difference.

I don't need to put any words in your mouth, it's already full of $#!t and some script kiddie lingo.

Good for you but again you are not understanding or do not wish too.  I was stating that I have seen programming language hidden better then what was mentioned in the first post and could look at the programming language and figure out the best removal method is all I meant to say.  To a novice, yes, they would crap their pants.  I said nothing about Decrypting AES keys.   I don't know one person that addresses encrypted keys head on.  They always look for holes to find their way into the data.  Why haven't you given a suggestion about how to handle a this type of ransomware?  Obviously you have some background dealing with it.  Anyone can complain and mention other topics besides this one but to give advice on how to handle it would be better way of approaching said topic.  Who knows maybe someone here has a simple fix for this type of ransomware.  You never know...
