Megaupload 2.0 to Launch With Original Megaupload User Database

Following the news earlier this week that Kim Dotcom intends to relaunch Megaupload, the entrepreneur has just delivered a new surprise. Rather than a cold start, Megaupload 2.0 will hit the ground running by deploying the original Megaupload user database.

Following a few hints earlier this week, it is now fully confirmed. Kim Dotcom will be launching a brand new file-sharing site with a familiar name.

Megaupload 2.0 is pencilled in for a January 2017 launch, an event that will coincide with the 2012 closure of the original Megaupload and the massive police raid on its operators.

Having successfully avoided the clutches of a hungry United States government for half a decade, this five-year anniversary is an important one for Dotcom, and it’s becoming clear he hopes to celebrate it with another poke in the eye for the Obama administration.

Details are few at this stage, but here’s what we know. Megaupload 2.0 will have 100gb of free storage. It will allow users to sync all of their devices and there will be no data transfer limits. On-the-fly encryption will be baked-in.

But while site features are important, what the original Megaupload had going for it was millions of loyal users. They were all made homeless and scattered when the site was shut down but according to Dotcom, there will be a future grand reunion.

Intriguingly, the serial entrepreneur says that Megaupload 2.0 will get a fantastic start in life. Rather than simply relying on word-of-mouth advertising to get going, his new venture will launch with the original Megaupload user database intact.

How Dotcom managed to preserve a copy of this data isn’t clear, but he says that each user account held within will get a foot up.

“Most Megaupload accounts will be reinstated with Premium privileges on the new Megaupload,” Dotcom announced this morning.

If every one of those former Megaupload users hit the site on day one, that’s 100 million people needing attention. It’s unlikely that anywhere near that will come aboard, but just one or two percent would be a tremendous start.

But hosting files isn’t the only thing on Dotcom’s mind. His censorship-resistant MegaNet project is still in development and although it’s not going to be ready until 2018 at the earliest, Dotcom says that Megaupload 2.0 will be a crucial component of that network.

“Megaupload 2.0 will be the launch platform for MegaNet. Let’s make sure that we have critical mass first. #100MillionUsers,” he said this morning.

Dotcom clearly has much work to do and even flat-out will struggle to meet his January deadline. Still, he doesn’t intend to do it alone.

“To former Megaupload and current Mega employees. We welcome you with open arms. Mega App developers, we have a great deal for you. Ping me,” he wrote a few hours ago.

So how will former Megaupload users know if they can use their old credentials to access the new site?

“Expect an email,” Dotcom concludes.

Well. well. most of that data stored at Megaupload are pirated videos and applications so I guess, most of it is more or less outdated and practically useless. Maybe some of the music might be saved, presuming that users might remember passwords and usenames! About same time Megaupload was busted, I had Rapidshare and Hotfile accounts, closed down too, and by now I don't have the least idea about my login data.

I haven't used that site login all of this decade, maybe around 2007-2008 (maybe 2009?).

There's no way I remember my password so I hope that's resettable.

Still got mine in FF password manager ;)

It is not the data that is going back online. That is gone forever. It is the user account logon/passwords that will be restored, not the account data, get it??

Now were going to see MU 2 then in 5 years it will be closed down and we will see Mega 2, then in five years MU 3 and then Mega 3. The game will go on for ever and who will gain, Mr. DotKom only. :P

That's is if hes not in some federal Prison by then ,  To me hes a mad man he got rich once  from piracy he should of got out of long before he got caught, but money makes people greedy  ,even in places its legal to pirate for you're own use its illegal to make money off of it like he done.

He done lost everything he had , even his wife left him because hes broke . Him breaking DMCA laws was the cause of it , before he got caught filelockers were more popular than p2p . He not only caused his self too get busted he caused many filehost to become really strict  and many to shutdown.

And this will be v3  not v2 he done made another one that is doing good  but he gave it away because he knows the cops are going to take what he has. Many file host today are full of infected ads and you have too  beef  up you're browser security like its Fort Knox to even use them . :P

There is no mention of any files being preserved or restored, don't forget that the servers and all data on it is in the hands of the feds and they have no intention to free any of it. I would guess one starts with a free user folder but old credentials and maybe premium privileges.

I don't understand why there is the need for yet another MEGA, remember that it was supposed to be what we have now? And i can't really say that it's any better, i liked the old Megaupload a lot more and never had any shitty problems like crappy browser storage being full or killed upload and download processes and that you can't share data without having an account which they can ban with a click denying access to all data bound to it, like Mediafire does.

Why reinventing the wheel yet again instead of fixing the old shit we have already?

Gosh.

Obviously I misunderstood the info. It's the USER DATABASE not the DATABASE; actually it makes more sense. Why a paralell Megaupload 2.0 and not Mega? Mr. Dotcom believes that many of his old users might rush and reactivate accounts giving him, as the note says, a good start. Well, might work for him. Or might not!

Is that why my Mega.nz account got banned? It's a way of saying we are closing down and we will pretend you break TOS even though you have 3 random files there you haven't touched in years. Interesting... might try megaupload when it's out.

Would be a bit too early, don't you think? Still more than 6 months to go. If it's still valid, one's account can receive 5 strikes before getting terminated. Probably too late to check how many you had. ;)

I had the brilliant idea of renovate my premium account for 3 moths and one week later Megaupload was closed. So I want my almost 3 premium months back! :D

  • 1 month later...

Does it mean Premium users of old megaupload will have Premium account?

If yes, then smile will be on the face of Premium users, specially lifetime Premium users.
