Cops: Man with baseball bat stops father from killing 2-year-old girl

When Don Gilbert heard screaming while at a motel in Vancouver, Washington on Tuesday night, he didn’t even think before grabbing his baseball bat and walking outside.

He walked out and saw Kyle Holder, 32, beating and kicking his 2-year-old daughter in the parking lot of the motel, according to KPTV.

Witnesses said Holder had thrown the toddler out the window of the motel and into the cement walkway. He then picked her up, threw her head on the ground several times and started stomping on her head, according to court documents.

When Gilbert saw the child was out of Holder’s grasp and on the ground, he moved in with the bat, according to KPTV.

“I hit him once in the back. He had the baby by his feet,” Gilbert told the TV station. “He took her to the curb and just slammed her down, and that’s when I cracked him in the skull three or four times.”

Law enforcement said they had to use a taser on the man, who was out of control when they arrived on scene. A police report says Holder was looking to kill his daughter.

“I did not want to kill her, but I had to,” Holder told investigators. “I had to hold my daughter and crush her head so she could go up to the sky.”

Deputies had received a complaint about Holder earlier in the day, according to KPTV, but did not arrest him.

Holder is facing charges for attempted murder. The 2-year-old girl is in critical condition.

the guy with the bat handled it all wrong...one hit would be all that was required.... so hard that the guys head should have split right open like a melon...no need for arrest or a trial, or for anyone to worry that he may eventually walk the streets again

Here is more back-story.

Gene Smith, who described himself as a family friend of Holder, said that Holder moved to Washington from Georgia just a few months ago to live closer to Keller’s family.

Smith, who lives in the Atlanta area, said that Holder suffers from alcoholism and drug addiction, as well as paranoia and schizophrenia. He added that Holder had been clean for a long time and had just gotten a job at Wal-Mart.

“He’s not a monster. …He’s got a disease,” Smith said. “I know it’s easy to rush to judge … but what happened last night is an episode. This is something nobody ever saw coming.”

Smith said he’s known Holder for 20 years and is the person who Holder would call when he wanted to drink or take a pill. He said that Holder would never hurt his daughter if he had known what he was doing.

“He loved his daughter immensely. He played with her every day, sang to her, played guitar for her,” Smith said. “He’s had some kind of psychotic break.”

It still doesn't give him a credible excuse for attempted murder.

Maybe for you reading about these kind of people is the closest you'll get to understanding them. For some of us, we experienced the wrath of (a) violent family member(s) up close & personal.

Think about the victim. A little girl that could be your daughter fighting for her life in a hospital.

having a mental illness  may be a reason for the attack...NOT  a credible excuse...the mere fact that h refused to take his meds and became dangerous and almost killed a someone...a small child at that... and his on kid  at that.... means but one thing... he is far too dangerous to left to his own judgment on the best course of treatment for his illness..i do feel sorry for the man but in no way does that mean he should be left alone to decide what is best for him ever again ...i have a few friends and even a few close family members with issues similar..quite often they get to point where they too stop taking their meds..it does not take long for them to become very unreasonable in their actions....and not a stretch to see if they were not forced to get themselves back under control that too could easily become violent...

alcoholism and drug addicts? As a mature individual human being, one should have the ability to quit these kind stupid habit. If one can not, what the difference between human and animals? So, this stupid man should  be the only one solely responsible for his own behavior. If he could not conduct like a human being, then prison is the best place for him.

@oliverjia  - you probably didn't read @n0_risk! 's post, containing additional info.

That's why you've missed  the most important detail :

Quote

Holder suffers from alcoholism and drug addiction, as well as paranoia and schizophrenia.

(...)

He said that Holder would never hurt his daughter if he had known what he was doing.

Mentally ill people often can't control their behavior.

That's why they can't be judged the same way as healthy people do.

If they are dangerous they HAVE TO be SEPARATED from the rest of the society and TREATED - if possible; NOT JAILED.

FYI

Mental illness itself means a lot of suffering, so mentally ill people would certainly prefer to be healthy.

They are simply ILL and can't be blamed for their condition, exactly the same way no one would blame you if you got pneumonia or cancer.

And one more thing :

Mentally ill people are much more prone to become addicts of any kind.

I would like to ask you to consider those basic facts BEFORE you start judging others.

"Gene Smith, who described himself as a family friend of Holder.

So, who is this Gene Smith, a family friend? How do we know what he said is true?

If this Holder suffers such mental diseases, why not get himself treated? So Wal-Mart hires drug and alcohol maniacs as their employee now?  I find this story hardly believable.

We truly don't know that.  And that's enough reason to not  rush to judge so easily.

Things use to be much more complicated than they look at the first glance.

Bull:shit: , selective censorship is enforced. Distorting the truth & changing history to suit a selective group of OP.

Jealousy & spitefulness is the true reason for this unwarranted character assassination against...

I got what you want & I'm loving the fact it drives some OP crazy.

A lot of people underestimate that they have a mental illness aswell as the symptoms they have to deal with and what it can do if not treated properly. I agree that replacing proper meds with alcohol and drugs doesn't help anyone, especially not the one that already has to deal with malfunctions in his head. In theory it requires a regular observation, some people have it once in their life and never again, some a bit more often with rather large timeframes in between and some are chronically sick.

Schizophrenia has a wide spectrum of symptoms, which makes it difficult to attest a matching diagnose and give the right medical treatment and all that makes only sense if the person understands and accepts the illness and is willing to get treatment but that is something Schizophrenia makes much harder on it's own for the nature of illness it actually is ( for example, a huge schizophrenic paranoia makes it much more unlikely that the person takes his meds, when he is under the impression and permanent threat that someone is after him that wants to kill him, why not using some shiny meds? ;) ).

Anyway, especially that he knew he's mentally ill, ignored and underestimated it completely is nobody else fault, except himself.

He knew he has a kid he has to care for and yet he didn't even managed to care for himself, that's the biggest tragedy.

I personally know people who deal with this in their daily lives...either themselves or a close loved one,,,and i can personally tell you,... that when they stop taking their meds  they just  DO NOT suddenly start acting in  a bizarre and dangerous manner ...there is a build up to that over time... not a long time frame but certainly not an over night  thing either

Quite frankly, shut the f!ck up if you aren't professionally trained to give advice about mental illness. :stfu:

Some people responding to this specific topic must remove their skull from anal orifice. :duh:

That is what you get posting on a software forum. If you want attention from professionally trained individuals, this is not the right forum. Also, have you taken your medics today? You seem a bit salty. :P
