Batu69
Researchers tested those overlay ads that block the video player on illegal free live streaming sites A free sports live streaming site Researchers from universities in Belgium and the US have provided solid research that attests something that everyone already knew, and that's the fact that a vast majority of illegal free sports live streaming sites contain malware. The researchers, from the KU Leuven University in Leuven, Belgium, and Stony Brook University in New York, USA, have managed to put out a figure, for the first time, on the possibility of encountering a malicious ad while surfing this kind of sites. One in two overlay ads on live streaming sites contains malicious code According to their tests, there's a 50 percent chance to run into a malicious overlay ad while trying to watch a live sports stream on these illegal sites. Researchers said their test pool included 23,000 free live streaming sites, spread across 5,600 domain names, a fifth of which were part of the Alexa Top 100,000 sites at the time of the tests. The testing process involved a semi-automated process during which the research team made more than 850,000 visits to these sites, loaded a live stream, and closed the overlay ads in order to view the video stream. Researchers then logged and analyzed the traffic resulted from these visits and said they found malicious activity in half of the ads they encountered. Some malicious ads will try to bypass ad blockers They said that most of the malicious traffic was found on sites that tried to copy the graphics and visual style of more reputable (but still illegal) sports live streaming portals. Researchers also said that browsers like Google Chrome and Safari were more targeted than the rest and that in some cases they found scripts that detected ad blocking software and tried to bypass it. To protect users, researchers are currently building a classifier that will find and report free sports live streaming pages employing any of the detected malicious techniques. Researchers plan to release the classifier at a later date. Article source
