Soon, feds will snoop on your social networks before granting security clearance

The US government now thinks it's a good idea to look at your Facebook, Twitter, Google_, GitHub, and Pinterest public social network records before it offers you a job.

Don't ask me why it took them so long. Back when I worked for NASA and Naval Sea Systems Command, I had security clearances. I assumed that -- were I to apply for a job requiring a clearance these days -- the agency responsible for personnel security investigations would be all over my social networks like white on rice. Well, you'd be wrong.

On the other hand, this is the same government where the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) managed to lose 21.5 million federal employee and security records.

The new so-called National Background Investigations Bureau (NBIB) won't be in business until 2018 -- if then.

In the meantime the new directive from James Clapper, US director of national intelligence, recognizes that social media records might be just as important as interviewing your friends and family for determining if you should get a clearance.

Private industry, of course, has known this for ages. By 2012, more than half of employers were checking on potential employee's public social network records.

That photo of you on Facebook from your freshman year in college with a bong in one hand and a beer in the other? Probably not a good career move. Just ask NFL draftee Laremy Tunsil how the video of him smoking a bong on Twitter worked out for him.

The government has finally decided checking on your public online persona is a good idea too. In the directive, investigators are empowered to look at your public social network records.

Investigators will not be allowed to ask for your passwords nor demand that you log into your account. In addition, they cannot look at your private or friends only messages. Nor can they create "honeypot" accounts to try to trick you into making friends with your investigators.

This is actually less invasive then private industry. Some companies have pressured would-be hires to turn over their Facebook passwords, for example, before considering hiring them.

While the focus of this new initiative is on screening potential employees, current staffers may also have their records checked when their security clearances come up for renewal.

How will this work? Good question. For now the DSS and OPM, which between them do a million checks a year, will continue to run security clearance checks. Eventually it will come under the purview of the NBIB. The exact mechanisms to do the social network checks have yet to be determined.

So, if you're considering a job that requires a security clearance -- or, for that matter, any job, you might want to clean up your public online face. Your potential employer is not going to be as understanding as your college frat brothers are about the photos of the kegger and the stripper incident.

I had have background checks to get jobs more than once  and never did they ask me for this  .. The fact is if they did i have no accounts other than one at github  and it dont link back too me they cant check something you dont have. Still 15% of the USA dont have the internet at all . And not everyone uses the internet to socialize ether but most do lol.  And yes employers  watch people who use there real names on Facebook and you're co workers will snitch you out but this is not the same thing as a background check before you get a job or just need access to work for sub contractors on a job for the government.

ZDNet should get their collective heads out of the sand.  The US Government has been checking these for years now.  In 2008 I had to list all social websites I visited for my background update.  Failure to list any that they later found was reason for revocation of your clearance.  They have warned us many times that posts on social networks can result in revocation of clearance.  No clearance, no job.  The questionnaire was 120 pages long and wanted to know every detail of my life since I was born, though they already had this data from previous BUs.  The hardest part is always remembering all the addresses I have lived at, so I made a copy of the BU years ago and update the info as needed so just need to copy it over whenever a new one is requested.

I know of private corporations who hire an entity to do background checks for them and they are very thorough, though that isn't always the case since some of these companies hire people, like stay-at-home moms, to just run google searches and aren't very thorough.

I never had too all i had too do is sign a paper  and my employer  done a background check .So you're  one of those people who dont care about his privacy so you're crazy enough to use you're real name on the open internet lawl ? Its a wonder you still have a job even ..If you ever make a mistake for the rest you're life they know exactly who you are . You think ZDnet  was the ones who broke this story you're sadly mistaken . The original post is from The Wall Street Journal . :P

Feds will now check your social media history before granting security clearance

RM9i7Nf.jpg

A new policy grants federal agencies access to a person's social media history when conducting background checks as part of the security clearance process. The wide-ranging set of rules are set to be implemented soon.

The federal government has confirmed that it will start targeting social media posts by prospective employees as part of its review process for security clearance.

The new policy, which will allow investigators to scan an applicant’s history on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and other similar sites, will be adopted soon, according to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI).

The guidelines make clear that agencies can target publicly available social media posts, if they deem it necessary, but cannot force individuals to hand over their passwords for private accounts, or provide pseudonyms for any profiles.

Additionally, the policy states that social media information gathered as part of a background check will not be retained unless it is considered “relevant” to the security status of the person in question.

In certain cases, the ODNI’S new rules would also permit agencies to pursue an applicant’s associates or friends, if mentioned in a suspicious social media post that suggests a possible national security concern.

“Social media has become an integral — and very public — part of the fabric of most Americans’ daily lives,” said Bill Evanina, director of ODNI’s National Counterintelligence and Security Center. “We cannot afford to ignore this important open source in our effort to safeguard our secrets — and our nation’s security.”

Officials believe that adding social media to the security review process could offer important information when deciding whether an individual can be trusted with secret information. The procedure often involves agencies attempting to determine the factors in a person’s background that could make them a target of blackmail.

Little to no detail has been given regarding the types of social media posts that could be flagged during the procedure. However, Evanina has suggested that social media threats made against the president, for example, would definitely be retained by investigators, reports the Wall Street Journal.

The debate over the use of social media in background checks by the federal government has been raging for several years, with Congress pushing the case in favor of the new policy. The budget deal passed in December 2015 required the ODNI to allow military and intelligence agencies to strengthen their security reviews, and specifically cited the need to evaluate social media posts.

Although lawmakers from both parties agree on the new policy, privacy advocates claim they will be watching closely to see if the government targets information they consider to be constitutionally protected as free speech. No specific date has been issued for the policy’s implementation, but the ODNI promises it will be taken up shortly.

What this law will do if they see you acting like a ass they want hire  you or  they will fire you if they catch you .Its bad enough  you have too put up with these idiots  all day , then you cant  even diss them online without them firing you  because there nosy old coots that dont have nothing better too do but spy on people.  This is why facebook  has nothing for me , Im  not going put my personal info out there  for them to get

Back in the day before Facebook existed if you said someones real name in the chat rooms or any  personal info you would be  banned this shows how messed up the world has become and how messed up of site Facebook really is that forces you too use you're real name..  I was thought long ago its not wise to trust people you dont know with you're info and people wonder how they get hacked . Well you know how many babysitters dont like kids?  when i was a kid some were mean to me and some were really good to me ,  You think the Facebook spies is going to save the world? Maybe that woman was not even mean to kids and they replaced her with someone who really is, that's reality. Most mean people are psychopathic liars and are really good at putting on a face even to there friends .

no.... but the  point is if you are stupid enough to post it and you lose your job or do not get hired because of your stupidity then you got nobody to blame but yourself, another point ...being stupid don;t need anyone spying on you to  have a consequence that only yourself to blame ....people have to realize they cannot be blaming everyone but themselves for their own choices.... analogy  today i kicked a 17 year smart ass out of mt store for shouting out swear words for no other reason than to be jackass,.,..,I told time to leave...he had the balls to freedom of speech...i said yea that may very well be true...but the consequence of acting that way is i ask you get out of my store when you act like an asshole... mostly what i am saying and you are missing...is don;t be putting shit out there that can get your ass fired ...and if you do...you got no one to blame but yourself...no matter what your excuse is

Even on  Facebook  all they have too do is invite there friends into whatsapp or some other encrypted  chat and the talk about who they want. So the more people gets in trouble because of stuff like this you just drive it underground  it will not stop it , it's not a solution , people  will gossip regardless  . Even in china  they do were you could be executed  for speaking you're mind.http://thenextweb.com/insider/2016/05/12/fbi-director-real-problem-whatsapps-encryption/

See its already happening its going underground again like before Facebook but with encryption this time

Are you ready for the mega-shift from social media to private media?

http://www.businessesgrow.com/2016/05/03/private-media/

Whats the point of even using something  when you know there watching you just do it were there not ?
