[Backup(s)] What does one do?

What do you do before taking a backup of your system?

So if just a registry backup, or picture files or a full blown total image, please share.

I do a complete clean up and de-fragment.

I use WinUtitlies, CrapCleaner, Norton Utilities 16, A.V.G. Cleaner, Sys32 cleaner, Disk Max and WonderShare Privacy Protector.

Then I do a RollBack RX BackUp then a Norton Ghost 15 full image.

I probably don't need a cleanup, but usually after a thorough clean two (2) G.B. is removed, so therefore saves on image space.

Just to add, do you do it a couple or more times per day, like morning, afternoon and evening backup, or once per day, once per week or even monthly?

I prefer to backup before doing any cleaning. Most problems arise from improperly cleaning a system, such as registry cleaning.

I still use ax64 or Flashback as it's W10 version is called, backs up my C drive evey hour. After a month or 2 I'll move these backups to an external drive, then just defrag and start using Flashback again from there.

Occasionally I'll use Macrium to make an image, maybe once a month.

Nice, :) I avoid registry clean-ups, as yes, they are problematic!

I run windows server. The server backs itself up twice per day. The server also backs up each of the three client computers once per day. The client computers are media room, wife and my computer. All client computers have ssd's. Given space constraints on ssd's, they pretty much only have the o\s installed on them. So the operating system drives already stay pristine and no need to clean. Web surfing is done within sandboxie, so do not pick up crap that needs cleaning. So the operating system drives are pretty much isolated, don't need cleaning, and get backed up once per day. And you also have multiple registry backups because each client is backed up daily. So nothing is done before back up of the operating systems drive.

Each client system has a storage hdd (pictures, videos, documents, emails,  etc.) I choose not to compress the backup of the storage media, so use syncback pro on the server to make a 1 to 1 backup, non compressed, of each computers pictures, music, etc. I find this easier for streaming between clients and over the web. Also, because each song, picture, etc, is an exact duplicate of the client computer, if the hard drive fails on the server, or on one of the clients, it's not a huge concern. You may have lost all of your media, but all of them are easily restored. So the biggest risk is the hard drive fails. But if a file becomes corrupted, well you have only lost one song, or one picture so risk is small. And it's easy to restore a single file. So nothing is done before backing up media. Synback pro only backups changes in individual files, so backup is quick.

A second hdd on each client contains installed programs. The server backs up each client "programs" drive daily. Here is a bigger risk, because the backup database can become corrupted more easily. And if key file is corrupted, well you have lost everything, the whole database. Doesn't matter if you have multiple daily backups or not, you can't restore from any of them unless you have computer wizardry that I don't posses. You will find yourself having to restore the whole server and starting your backups from scratch. So in this case, you probably want to use data duplication, but for this you are going to spend more $ on additional hard drive space. I am not there yet, but soon I hope. On the "programs" hard drive I only install the programs I use, nothing else. Testing of programs are done in Vm. So I do nothing before backing up the programs hard drive.

So there is your answer  Lee, I do didly squat!!!!!!

Jokes are funny stories or comments which are intended not to offend, now think about that for a moment.

Guys! let's help each other in a constructive way.

@LeeSmithG :

You are free to use whatever you want, but i partially agree with @pc71520 about not using some programs you choosed.

There are far better out there. just keep debating in this thread and you will end up with better programs suggestions (if you plan to change your toolkit apps)

Be open to every suggestion and make your choice.

Ask members why they use or don't use a given program.

Maybe you will change your mind after they give your more explanations about their choices.

wow you really dig in and backup all! I used once macrium reflect to backup the notebook's OS and recovery partition to an external hard drive, now I just backup my files (documents, music, pictures) all that's small and not risky I put it also in online storage to get a off-site copy like they suggest

what do you people think about the macrium reflect bootable backup utility, i liked it did good compression and seems stable

Macrium Reflect is a great and efficient program. it competes even with the leader Acronis True Image!
