Batu69
Plenty of Bitcoin users use Tor to access the Internet and deep web. Up until now, there was nothing particularly wrong with that, but a new ruling may change that scenario altogether. If this ruling is to be approved, any federal magistrate judge can issue a search and seizure warrant for anyone who uses Tor or similar software to remain anonymous on the Internet. Using Tor Might Become “Illegal.” A lot of consumers will argue that someone who has nothing to hide would have no need for anonymous software solutions such as Tor. However, given the limited number of privacy-centric options to browse the World Wide Web, Tor and consorts are becoming more and more popular every month. Unfortunately, that success has not gone by unnoticed, as the US Supreme Court has approved a rule change that will shake things up like never before. By granting every federal magistrate judge the right to issue a warrant for anyone using Tor, anonymity on the Internet may become a serious offense. Moreover, if the US Congress does not undertake action to fight this ruling, it will go into effect as soon as December 2016. As a result, the FBI can then legally search computers running Tor remotely, even if they have no idea where the machine is located, or what it is being used for. Simply having anonymity software installed on a computer would be reason enough for the FBI to investigate that user to “combat cyber crime.” This ruling approval comes on the heels of media headlines detailing how over 1 million consumers use Tor to access Facebook. For every single illegal use case for anonymity software, there are hundreds, if not thousands, legal ones. If this ruling gets approved, a lot of innocent users will be spied upon by the FBI for no reason whatsoever. Moreover, this would allow the FBI to spy on Bitcoin users all over the world if they use Tor software as well. Ever since the shutdown of Silk Road, law enforcement agencies have been looking at ways to track Bitcoin users’ identities on the dark web. While nothing has been set in stone yet, this ruling is a grave concern for privacy in the US and beyond. steven36
They need to know who it is there going after anyone on the planet can be behind tor , police and everything else uses it only way they would get a warrant would be like if you were on a site on the darknet were was used for illegal activity then they can try to hack you.. The article is misleading if Tor was illegal it would not work at all without making a bridge like they have too do in China were it really is illegal . Quote ]pluribusblanks an hour ago This does not mean that they can randomly go after people running Tor. This is for cases like the one where the FBI placed exploit code on a hidden service that they previously compromised, in order to force users visiting the site to send their real IP/MAC addresses to the FBI. (That particular exploit only worked on older unpatched versions of Tor Browser running on Windows.) If they go to a judge and ask for a warrant to 'search' the computer of a visitor to a dark market site, for example, they couldn't get it because they didn't know in what jurisdiction the visitor's computer, hidden by Tor, was physically located. Now, they can try to run exploits against the visitor of the site even though the jurisdiction of the visitor's computer is not known. They already been doing this for years this law just makes it legal . Back in the 60s the use to illegally wiretap peoples land lines and wait tell they went too commit a crime and be there waiting on them . If you live in the USA and you ever committed a crime or was just suspected of a crime they already know you're whole life history anyways. Hover the man who founded the FBI he had info on everyone even the president that he could use against you and ruin you so how has things really changed and he hated Communist. Rastus_BoJangles_Johnson
Doesn't TOR make you anonymous? So how FBI know who to go after? I mean if FBI can find and track TOR user so easily why would anyone use it? This sounds like scare tactics. IDK

IDK TOR dont make you anonymous it only hides you're ip ..If you use TOR and put you're real name and picture and use the same username all over the clearnet i can even track you down. This is how they caught the guy who ran slikroad . TOR is very easy to detect by just checking you're ip.

flash48
I have been told that even if you use Tor on a VPN connection, the FBI can still track you down. Is this really true?

When someone ask me this question . I ask them this question is possible for you too commit crimes and hideout the rest of you're life on the streets? The more serious the crime the more likely they are going put in the needed resources into finding you . Many people get away with petty crimes all there life , but very few people get away with more serious crimes but some do. The more personnel info you put out there on the internet the more easy you make it for them ,if they are looking for you, same as on the streets if you go around cops a lot or ride in cars a lot there going ask questions if they stop you and sooner or latter they will, if there looking for you there going check you're work record bank record etc. so on the streets its almost imposable to evade the law without becoming a hermit . But on internet unless you conduct business on it there's no need to give you're real name out. So if you get tracked its because you left a trail of personal info all over the internet and its no ones fault but you're own . You should of thought about this before. If they want too find you. sooner or latter they most likely will .. you most likely had a so called friend that told them were you were at most the time they have informants everywhere . I seen U.S. Marshals harass someone just because someone up the street from were they lived told them they knew a certain person and they didn't even know the person. A good show too check out is murder comes to town . Its based on true stories across the USA and every time they question everyone they think that may know something so them harassing you is not really strange all it takes is someone too bring up you're name . Holmes
They can go to a place local to you and ask business owners where you last were thats what happened in the movie purgatory flats (based on a address you were at last). For your information the fbi can get a warrant without you using tor. The government is the reason tor exists there good at biting themselves in the ass. Jaley
How is using Tor illegal? Tor is just like any browser except that it encrypts your network and spoofs your identity. Its akin to saying those who are criminals using Firefox/Chrome would deem Firefox/Chrome as an illegal software to use which is bluntly absurd. We will get a judge to also issue warrants for users of Firefox/Chrome whom we suspect of using them to obtain illegal software. -- FBI
