New Windows 10 Updates Causing Serious Problems

Windows 10 has been getting a lot right lately. After infuriating many with forceful and increasingly sneaky upgrade tactics, Microsoft MSFT -7.22%’s massive Windows 10 ‘Anniversary Update’ restored some faith with a lorry load of great new features. But now problems have struck again after two new Windows 10 automatic updates began causing serious errors…

April updates ‘KB3147461’ and ‘KB3147458’ are at the centre of the controversy. Just after their release Microsoft started an official thread for users to give feedback on the pair and it has since been flooded by nearly 900 responses spread across 88 pages.

Feedback on two new Windows 10 updates has not been good.

Users cite a huge range of issues since installing the updates, including:

  • Continuous crash loops (PCs installing the updates, restarting, reinstalling them and restarting ad infinitum)
  • Broken apps (Windows Store, Calculator, Photo Gallery, Messaging, Alarms, Solitaire, etc)
  • Star Menu crashes
  • ‘Critical Error’ pop-ups
  • Bluescreens of death
  • Broken trackpad gestures
  • Missing monitor resolutions
  • Slow boot times

User ATAt0micR3d summed up the general feeling on the thread more than 800 comments in saying: ”I’ve been battling with this update since it was issued. I really just want it to go away at this point.”

Similarly poster Thomas.Ludwig explained: “After the update and some hours of using it, the computer froze and crashed. Restarting ended in a blue screen and the message that ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt, Error code 0xc00000e9 and the computer is not doing anything anymore.”

At this stage it remains unclear which of the updates is the bigger problem (it may be both), but I would strongly advise all Windows 10 users pass the word around and sit them out until Microsoft works out where the problems lie. Here are some tips for stopping automatic updates.

All in all this development comes at a bad time for Microsoft. Windows 10 market share is growing, stability has been relatively good during 2016 and the company has demonstrated that it is prepared to continually upgrade the operating system with a steady flow of new features and functionality.

But forced automatic updates never were and never will be a good idea…

People out there need to understand and accept two things:

  • Windows 10 insiders = alpha testers;
  • Windows 10 "stablers" = beta testers.

New Windows 10 Updates not causing any problems. At all have not found any problem with them.
Apparently the certain people find always problems. And some of them are "writers", some are "journalists".

The reason is usually that which located between ears.

Pretty concerning though.

Today you have a working PC, tomorrow? who knows.
You can understand why many small business owners want to stay on or go back to Windows 7 and just turn off updates.

I don't really know what Microsoft were thinking rolling out new features and major O/S updates automatically.
It kind of breaks golden rule no.1... if everything is working fine then don't screw with it.

"If it does not work with you, the problem is you!"... Just like that?!
You can not be so simplistic...

There is big difference, my cup is not half empty, but it is half full....
This is the difference what is the pessimistic and what is optimistic.

Microsoft is using people for beta testing windows 10. Even the "stable" builds are still beta imho.

3 months left for the free upgrade to windows 10 (from win7/8). Maybe after this they will release more stable builds!

I will go to accept this possibility when there is a complete restructuring of the company... Exchange Balmer for Nadella was just a move to please shareholders... Nothing has changed in fact... If the first had in Vista his worst step, the second will be crucified by 10 very soon... I think Nadella's farewell will be even more shameful than Balmer's...

Actually I am very optimistic that if you are running Windows 10 your cup is totally empty.  Anyone who would volunteer their system to test Microsoft's software has a screw loose on their keyboard.  And now every Windows 10 user is praying for a stable version of a system that they have been unable to perfect in over a year.  Most of us are just waiting for July to get here so they will stop sending out all the stupid GWX crap to our stable 7 and 8.1 systems.  Does anyone wonder why there are still brand new systems available with Windows 7 and 8.1 directly from the manufacturers.  And then all the so-called gurus are spouting the demise of Windows 7 support, which in reality is the best thing Microsoft can do for its users since its support has always proved more harmful than good.  If Windows 10 was a car it would never be allowed on the nation's highways because it is unsafe and accident prone and would be the subject of the largest 'lemon' recall in automotive history.

i always turn off windows update. never had problems (with gwx neither)

if there is important security updates, i prefer to do it manually.

i do it rarely and after some time of its release though.

My windows 7 and windows 8.1 are runing fine, so why bother and track every single new kb?

Don't be surprised if a new kb for a new system screw up your computer! you're the 1st person to blame in this case!

I had problems with 3, 98, 98se, 2000, mil, vista, 7, 8, 8.1, and some with 10; plus red hat but all were and are just minor problems that can be pretty much solved on my own using sources on the net. What new item has been built that has worked perfect for everyone?

Did anyone understand that? O.o

- How can you Dual Boot Win 7 and 10 using different HDD? It isn't a Dual boot if both OS are on different hard drives.

- If you have a windows 7 boot and a Win 10 boot, and the win 7 boot upgrades to win 10, now you have 2 win 10 boots?

- Windows 10 is dual booting with itself?

- Why install win 10 twice?

- The BIOS thinks that having 2 win 10 boots is dumb and only reads the first one, since the second one is the same bootloader.

- You are "wrath" ??? Is that a new video game/ anime character?

- Who taught you how to computer? Get your money back.

My head hurts just trying to understand. If I was your PC, I'd crash too.

It's clear that English is not the poster's native language, so cut them a little slack. :)

Ummm, yes it is. Different partition(s) for the OS's is the only requirement.  Have done and seen dual boot systems with the OS's on different HD's.

No. The poster seems to have meant "installed" (not upgraded) Windows 10 on a different HD.

Again, English has gotten in the way. By "I AM WRATH", he/she probably means "I AM ANGRY". I would be too if yet another flaky MS update has screwed my system. :)

True!

Our community gather members from different nations. We need to be patient and try to understand each other.

Personally, i understand what Farrah said and Karlston, (thanks to him) decoded it perfectly!

About dual booting from different hdds: i had it working perfectly on an old computer (not windows 7 + win 10 though)

Necessary boot files are, of course, alway located in C drive.

Maybe its your system that has the problems because many of us have reported not to have this problem. Is it an antiquated system or a fairly new system. Try to unplug some USB connected or attached to your system and try again.
