Microsoft’s Build 2016 developer conference starts tomorrow, March 30, 2016, and some details on Build events are already starting to leak out on Twitter. Specifically, Microsoft plans to show Bash running on Ubuntu Linux on Windows 10 during Build 2016. Originally, Tero Alhonen (@teroalhonen) and WalkingCat (@h0x0d) posted the details on Twitter:

Spoiler

Apparently, Microsoft’s Channel 9 has detailed that there will be a “Windows Command Line” discussion on Day 1 of Build 2016. Now, it looks like Microsoft will also discuss running Bash on Linux too. For those thinking Bash is a party (like me), it, unfortunately, isn’t. Mary Jo Foley puts it best:

“Bash is a Linux shell. It’s a set of add-ons and plug-ins that are a superset of the Bourne shell, and provide users with the ability to employ text commands to evoke specific actions (and/or to use scripts to do so). There already are ways to get the Bash shell running on Windows, such as by using the Cygwin or MSYS utilities. But Microsoft seemingly plans to go a step beyond that.”

WinBeta already reported that Windows 10 build 14251 had some Linux subsystem files, but Microsoft has not provided any explanation for the Linux files’ presence. It looks like we will just have to wait until Microsoft Build 2016 tomorrow. Stay tuned to WinBeta for all your Build 2016 news!

I've been waiting for them to release SSH server for Windows (not 3rd party) but I won't hold my breath.

This explains  whats  going on its not really meant for target home users or businesses   its more of a developers  feature

Canonical and Microsoft are doing this because Ubuntu on Windows' target audience is developers, not desktop users. In particular, as Microsoft and Canonical continue to work more closely together on cloud projects, I expect to find tools that will make it easy for programmers to use Ubuntu to write programs for Ubuntu on the Azure cloud.

So is this MS-Linux? No. Is it a major step forward in the integration of Windows and Linux on the developer desktop? Yes, yes it is.

This is the first step to kill Linux's future, according to MS strategy. How Nokia was killed by MS earlier? Did we forget it?

The same strategy applied on Android too. MS was converting Android users.

MS swallowed the mobile giant[Nokia] using the same method. The strategy is to help them at first and then take control and destroy it completely.

Linux Dev's and Cos must stop here and anymore help would destroy Linux's future including Android!

Ubuntu  dont own Linux  Ubuntu gets most of there stuff  from Debian Ive  already had some dealings  with antix  based on Debian its not bad  . If you dont like there working with Microsoft switch distros  .

1.The hard core Linux community already hates Ubuntu anyway

2.SUSE  made a deal with MS many years ago and many still dont like that distro tell this day.

3.Will the majority  of Linux community kick Ubuntu to the curb the same way.

Ubuntu Coming to Windows 10

In its quest to become the Microsoft of the Linux world, Ubuntu and Microsoft are expected to announce today that Ubuntu will soon run on Linux 10.

Holy crap!

In Friday’s Week in Review I jokingly opined that I wouldn’t be surprised to see “Ubuntu for Windows” as a move by the folks at Canonical as part of their plans for world domination. Guess what? It’s really happening.

In an article published Tuesday, Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols writes that “[a]ccording to sources at Canonical” a deal has been worked out between Ubuntu’s parent company and Microsoft that will lead to the GNU/Linux distro being able to run alongside Windows 10. According to Vaughan-Nichols, “This will not be in a virtual machine, but as an integrated part of Windows 10.”

Details of this new partnership are expected to be announced this morning at the Microsoft Build developer conference in San Francisco. It’s expected that the Windows implementation of the Linux distro won’t be the full operating system complete with the Unity desktop, but more of a developers toolkit version allowing access to such as Bash, make, gawk and grep.

Just as no crystal ball was needed to predict such a project and partnership coming from the folks on the Isle of Man, no fortune telling devices are needed to predict what the response will be from the free tech communities — almost unanimously they’ll be against it and will see this as proof that Canonical, which already has something of a tarnished reputation in FOSS circles, has little to no commitment to free and open source.

What will be more interesting will be to see the verbal fights which are sure to break out among dyed-in-the-wool Ubuntu users and supporters on social sites such as Reddit. I’m assuming we’ll see most Ubuntu fans supporting and defending this move, with other longtime Ubuntu users in opposition. We can also expect to see some longtime Ubuntu users announcing that they’ll be ditching Ubuntu for another distribution.

This is indeed a day to grab the popcorn.
