War on adblockers: Now more publishers take action against advert-killing tech

The campaign against adblockers rages on in Europe, with France's media now taking a united stand against advert filtering.

Several major French media firms have this week taken a united but flexible stand against adblocker tech.

Anyone who tries to visit Le Figaro's website with an adblocker installed on their browser will be met with an image of the New Zealand's feared All Blacks ruby team performing the Haka war dance and a message stating that to access content, the user will need to disable the adblocking app.

Others involved in France's stand against adblockers include Le Monde, L'Équipe, L'Express groupe Altice Media, M6 web, RTLNet, Deezer, 20 Minutes, and the sites of Lagardère Active, Le Point, and Marie Claire.

Explaining the program, Le Figaro said French online publishing trade body Geste in December invited French publishers to trial a week-long campaign to deter adblockers.

However, publishers may choose to stifle adblockers for longer if they wish and can choose how they communicate with adblock-using visitors.

France's laissez-faire approach differs from the co-ordinated action planned by Swedish publishers for the entire month of August.

Daniel Weilar, CEO of Nyheter24, told DigiDay that 80 to 90 percent of publishers in Sweden will participate in the initiative, which is known internally as "Get our s**t together".

Anyone with an adblocker will be asked to pay to view content and uninstall the adblocker, and video content will be made "nearly unwatchable", Weilar said, who is not a fan of whitelisting individual publications.

"Yes, we know this could be naïve, and we know this will be complicated," he said.

The Swedish blockade on adblockers was agreed in December with Sweden's IAB. The main focus, as IAB Sweden's Charlotte Thür put it at the time was to make users know "there are consequences" to using adblockers.

IAB Europe was alarmed last month over Three's plans for network-wide adblockers in the UK and Italy.

More like "try to force our annoying mind-numbing intelligence-insulting ad sh*t on users".

A lot more like "drive users away because we force our ad sh*t on them".

When you weigh the option of using an adblocker and not getting malvertising or using an adblocker and not being able to view a site, it seems to me that it is a no brainer and the adblocker wins every time.  Besides that there is the fact that if a video exists then in minute or hour it will exist all over the internet.  I have problems with some major news sites that host their videos on other sites that I cannot view with the security settings in my browsers, but can always find it on another site very easily and watch it.  There are many other ways to get data from a blocked website, none of which require the removal of an adblocker or changing security settings.

I dont speak those languages so i could care less but I tested Le Figaro  and  its working fine with my  current  ad blocking setup . Fight fire with fire and report the sites to reek, abp+ and adbypasser , Wage you're own war back I seen sites do this and give up after awhile because we kept getting around it . But most of these sites above dont have nothing no other site dont have so  maybe best to boycott  it all together if you cant find away around it. Sometimes you can just block the scripts  and bypass anti adblock  and some user scripts and filters help  just report the sites to ones who make list and scripts :P

I can use MPV  and watch videos  from here as well  not even in my browser lol

I never seen many sites i cant get around if you have the right addons  and scripts and i deal with sites  with anti adblock  everyday for a very long  time when i started fighting anti adblock , userscripts.org  was still going strong witch is nothing but a archive now .
