Piracy harms are now part of US Education Law

Last month President Barack Obama signed the Every Student Succeeds Act into law, making $1 billion dollars available for educational technology spending. In addition, the new law ensures that educators are aware of the piracy harms new technologies introduce.

With bipartisan support, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) became law late last year, outlining what U.S. public education policy looks like in the years to come.

One of the key changes to its predecessor is a stronger focus on technology. If fully funded, school districts can receive up to a billion dollars to spend on education technology.

What hasn’t been mentioned in any mainstream coverage, however, is that this technology part includes a piracy component.

It turns out that various entertainment industry lobby groups have kept a close eye on the bill. In its most recent disclosure the MPAA lists “content protection” as a lobbying topic related to ESSA, and this hasn’t been in vain.

When reading through the final text we see several mentions of “piracy harms,” always related to education technology. For example, the available funds can be used for all sorts of educational training and development related to the “harms of copyright piracy”

“(i) effectively integrate technology into curricula and instruction (including education about the harms of copyright piracy),” one reference reads.

Piracy harms…

The law doesn’t go into detail on what the harms of online piracy are. This might turn into some interesting discussions down the road as academic studies show varying results.

The addition of the piracy related language is celebrated by the entertainment industries, including the MPAA-backed organization Creative Future. The group lists a thank you note on its website allowing the public to forward the message to Congress.

“Congress did the right thing! [ESSA], which sets new educational standards for our country, ensures that teachers, parents, and staff who are learning about new technologies in order to instruct the next generation of digital citizens must also understand the harms associated with piracy.”

“There is no better time to help students understand copyright than when they are learning how to use the Internet! Now, technology training for educators will also include this important pro-creativity message,” Creative Future adds.

In recent years the MPAA and RIAA have already started to get involved in copyright education. As part of the Center of Copyright Information they helped to create a new curriculum for California schools.

Initially the lesson materials were rather one-sided, lacking a proper mention of issues such as fair use and alternatives to standard copyright licenses. After a public outcry, this was eventually changed in an updated version of the lesson materials.

Continuing down this path, it’s expected that various copyright groups will now reach out to educators to assist them with training and education related to the harms of piracy.

Except drug abuse actually damages your body, mind, while piracy is just exact copy of Copytrolled software. One damages everyone and another just those who can't make a decent software or provide support to it. Poor people won't buy software anyway. It's a law to protect cheating ones against being cheated.

Not everyone who pirates is poor though and  software  is just a small part of it and you can get addicted  to anything   , that's what gives it a bad name its not robin hood .. many people  making money off it they need to get a real job. Only  there's very few  good  sites like Nsane left witch don't allow people to make money from warez . But  still you got people hiding in the background waiting on someone to share something for free so they can profit from  it.  Most Pirates lost the pilot long ago, its suppose to about sharing but now its about greed  and that's why the governments  are so harsh on it ..

I agree, but copytroll police mostly shutdown sites which don't make money of it, and there are so many websites which make money of sharing and still going strong. I don't really agree that you can get addicted to piracy, considering risks you take, it's easier just to buy software you like. Greediness is endless.

You are so right, we had an ex-hells angel come out to junior high school of mine with a board of different drugs pinned to it, we not only learned the names but what they looked like. He focused on shooting up a lot and said when your hard core and have clasped most of your veins you go after the ones left, opened his mouth and flipped his tongue up and showed us the veins under it. I've never shot up cause of this visit, but there was plenty other to explore - I stayed with organic mostly in those days and have long since not done any or even drink now. You just grow up or wise up. Only the good die young.

If not addicted they see it as a sport but, bottom line to them is to profit from someone else work. Where's the good in that to anyone but themselves. God only knows what you get from some of them beside a soft, lost money if you go that route, or buying more protection.

Back when i use to do it i was addicted  to helping  people  out . Once everywhere  started  posting  it for money and I seen sites  had just as good as links as people that do it for free  because they use ads  filehost  that pay per download and things like donations  to get paid  . I seen it was not worth the risk  to do it for free and decided  to let them take the risk after all there getting paid i wasn't . Why risk you're  butt so others can get paid? I had problems with blogs  and other money uploaders  leeching my files so it was time to move on . the site  i use to belong too tired  to ban these leechers  but they would just come back with new names  . And this was a closed  site  not open like this one . Here they dont even have to sign in  . :)

i left  warez forums from  sometime  in 2011 tell  2014  before i even came back  I can find what  ever i want for personal use  and not sign in anywhere.

Filehost  use to be more popular than p2p even and much more safer before they started  paying uploaders cash   ..Public p2p use  to be really scary  it was nothing to get infected files from it  back not  that many years ago.
