Plus cloudless SD card back up for Android

BITTORRENT has announced a major update to its Sync software that offers cloud-free peer-to-peer file and folder syncing to homes and, increasingly, to businesses.

Since it was launched, BitTorrent Sync has become a genuine alternative to cloud providers for individuals and small businesses who are uncomfortable with having their data stored in the ether. It allows users at remote computers, servers or NAS devices to mirror folders anonymously and without passing through a central server.

New in Sync 2.3 is the ability to add encrypted folders, offering even more security. It allows sharing to be toggled as read only, write only or encrypted with a security key using AES-128 encryption cyphers.

Also new is the ability to run Sync as a service in Windows rather than as a foreground program. This makes life a lot easier for servers and multi-user machines as it allows the syncing process to continue even if the user isn't logged in.

Android users can benefit from the ability to back up to and from SD cards for the first time, a feature that can be activated in Android 5.0 Lollipop and above.

Linux users, meanwhile, get the addition of selective sync, allowing them to choose files for download rather than having to commit to the whole folder. This feature is for Pro users.

BitTorrent has always maintained that its Pro service is meant as a means to support enterprise use, rather than to supplant the free version that offers more features than most home users will ever need.

There has also been a whole crop of bug fixes and improvements to the UI, as well as the announcement of the Sync IT Alpha Programme for intrepid testers who want to work with BitTorrent on finding ways to scale out and improve Sync's performance.

BitTorrent has been working tirelessly over the past few years to reinvent the protocol that bears its name as a legal but confidential range of tools, including paid music downloads, confidential chat and the beginnings of a torrent-based web browser.

The team announced a partnership with WD last year to allow Raspberry Pi to be used as a mass storage back-up device.
