Stephen Hawking’s dire warning: Humanity won’t last another 1,000 years on Earth

The proof? An audience member asked a question about One Direction's Zayn Malik

Stephen Hawking's dire warning: Humanity won't last another 1,000 years on Earth

On Monday, renowned physicist Stephen Hawking gave his first Australian speech at Sydney’s Opera House via hologram from his office at the University of Cambridge. And he did not have an overly positive message for the continent down under.

“We must continue to go into space for the future of humanity,” he said. “I don’t think we will survive another 1,000 years without escaping beyond our fragile planet.”

“I want to share my excitement and enthusiasm about this quest, so remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet,” he continued.

After his planned remarks, one audience member asked about the cosmological effect of Zayn Malik leaving boy band One Direction, proving that humanity really is buying time that it solidly does not deserve.

“Finally, a question about something important,” he responded. “My advice to any heartbroken young girl is to pay attention to the study of theoretical physics because one day, there may well be proof of multiple universes… It would not be beyond the realms of possibility that somewhere outside of our own universe lies another, different universe. And, in that universe, Zayn is still in One Direction.”

Perhaps the final nail in the coffin of humanity comes in the form of the media coverage of this event. A very small handful of articles led with Hawking’s warning that we are not long for this Earth. An avalanche of stories, however, celebrated that the physicist had finally weighed in on Malik’s decision to leave the boy band.

GET A GRIP, PEOPLE. DEATH IS EVERYWHERE.

NOT SO SLOW OR FAST ! THIS REPORT SAYS HE SAYS WE HAVE FAR LESS TIME THAN THAT WHICH IS STATED ABOVE...

Hawking Has More Bad News For Humanity

Cheery physicist Professor Stephen Hawking says that mankind could be wiped out by our own creations within the next 100 years

Answering audience questions at this year’s BBC Reith Lectures, he said that our rush to understand and improve life through science and technology could be humanity’s undoing.

He has previously suggested that colonising other planets will be the only way that the human race can survive, but he warns that we may lose Earth to some kind of major disaster before we have a chance to properly do so.

“Although the chance of a disaster to planet Earth in a given year may be quite low,” he explained, “it adds up over time, and becomes a near certainty in the next thousand or ten thousand years.

"By that time we should have spread out into space, and to other stars, so a disaster on Earth would not mean the end of the human race.

"However, we will not establish self-sustaining colonies in space for at least the next hundred years, so we have to be very careful in this period.”

It’s not the first time the professor has mongered doom; he has previously warned that AI robots will wipe us out unless we ban them first and that hostile aliens are about to destroy us.

This latest warning comes with the footnote that further research into science and technology will provide “new ways things can go wrong”.

“It’s important to ensure that these changes are heading in the right directions,” he added.

“In a democratic society, this means that everyone needs to have a basic understanding of science to make informed decisions about the future.

"So communicate plainly what you are trying to do in science, and who knows, you might even end up understanding it yourself.

“We are not going to stop making progress, or reverse it, so we must recognise the dangers and control them.”

@humble3d  Thanks for that.:) I took the first thing of interest to experiment in this thread, so I did not look too close for a topic.

Hawking has been consistent in his dark predictions (with a sense of humor). Moreover, I think he is completely right about the many dangers threatening the planet and our chances of survival. Thinking in the dimension of human life spans blinds our outlook on these things. It's also very brave to call for action to settle into space.

In our present form we may not even be suitable for it. I think Hawking knows about our chances, but he is a man who doesn't like to rely on God, and I agree with him.

His advice reminds me of a Disney movie.

While I'm all for his greatness and his knowledge, humans are there because of earth and would not exist without it.
