Germany joined the International Zero-Emission Vehicle Alliance (ZEV Alliance) last month and committed to make all passenger vehicles emission-free by 2050. Today, Reuters reports what seems to be the government’s intention to make the first actionable move toward the ZEV Alliance’s goal.

German Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel said he wants to commit two billion euros ($2.17 billion) to encourage more people to buy electric cars. Gabriel said electric car buyers would receive a subsidy from the government, without specifying the type of subsidy.

The Economy Minister also reiterated Germany’s intention to expand EV charging infrastructure.

The initiative should bring Germany’s incentives on par with the other governments participating in the ZEV Alliance, which include the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Norway in Europe (OK maybe not on par with Norway’s incentives); California, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island and Vermont in the United States; and Québec in Canada.

Germany is the thirteenth government to join the International Zero-Emission Vehicle Alliance, which aims at making all passenger vehicles emission-free by 2050. The group made the announcement Thursday at the UN global climate talks in Paris.

The governments now participating in the ZEV Alliance include the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and Norway in Europe; California, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island and Vermont in the United States; and Québec in Canada. The participants’ markets represent about half of the electric vehicles sales worldwide. They aim at reducing transportation sector climate impacts by more than 1 billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year by 2050, lowering global vehicle emissions by about 40 percent.

Nic Lutsey, Program Director of the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) and serving Secretariat to the International ZEV Alliance, said on the announcement:

“These governments are leading the way when it comes to early adoption of electric vehicles by offering a mix of financial and non-financial incentives, vehicle policy, consumer awareness and outreach, and the installation of a charging infrastructure.”

Let’s hope that this is one of many more announcements coming out of the UN climate change conference about accelerating the transition to zero-emission transportation.

Germany wants to put 2 billion euros into encouraging electric cars

Jan 13 German Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel wants to commit two billion euros ($2.17 billion) to encourage more people to buy electric cars, the newspaper Die Zeit reported on Wednesday.

Buyers of electric cars would receive a subsidy from the government, the newspaper said, giving no further details.

Gabriel also wants to expand charging stations and encourage federal offices to use electric cars - an initiative that will be funded under the current German budget without tax increases, he said.

The German government aims to put one million electric cars on the roads by 2020. Among the country's carmakers, BMW, Mercedes and Volkswagen now produce all-electric cars; Audi, Mercedes and Porsche have plans to build one.

Sales of electric cars totaled some 19,000 in 2014, but at the end of 2014 Germany had only 2,400 charging stations and around 100 fast-charging points.

Calls for supporting electric cars grew at the end of last year after the Volkswagen emissions scandal. Both Gabriel and his fellow Social Democrat Environment Minster Barbara Hendricks have called for a quota for electric cars. ($1 = 0.9216 euros)
