Confirmed: Samsung to make Snapdragon 820

Qualcomm has made a landmark choice for its next-generation Snapdragon mobile chips, as it’s chosen to have Samsung manufacture it, rather than its long standing partner, TSMC. This marks the first time that Qualcomm has had any firm other than TSMC manufacture its high-end chips.

The chip in question is Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 820 processors. The deal to manufacture them is thought likely to be worth around a billion dollars to Samsung (as per Reuters) and couldn’t come at a better time. Samsung has recently faced falling consumer product sales leading to dips in its profit estimations.

On top of that, it was also passed over for the production contract on any of AMD’s next generation CPUs and GPUs, despite rumours to the contrary. While that would have been more of a surprising move had Samsung been chosen, TSMC is likely thankful that it received at least part of the AMD contract now that it’s lost the Qualcomm deal.

As some analytsts have suggested, while Samsung is still a dominant force in the consumer electronics scene, this may be the beginning of a shift in its internal strategy to become more of a manufacturing partner, or at least diversify its services so it isn’t so reliant on smartphone and tablet sales.

Now is a great time to do that too, as its FinFET process is proving popular and it has just announced that mass production of the technology has begun. It also has a 10nm die shrink process in the works too, something that chip makers will be very interested in.

I've had the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 & S6, and while I loved the S4, I'm counting down the months until I can rid myself of this unrootable phone and switch over to the newest Xiaomi, LG or Nexus flagship phone with a different carrier; where I can once again obtain root, get back my beloved extSDcard slot and timely OS upgrades.  Samsung can do whatever they want with their processors; I honestly couldn't care less. Great phones are coming out from Asia at ridiculously low prices; which will drive down prices and force insane manufacturing competitiveness.

Here there is lot of competition but lack of hardware quality. The phones may look sturdy but the hardware in it may not last as much as the ones from big companies like Samsung or LG do.

I'm hearing so many great things about Xiaomi and Huawei this new year, that I have to believe their flagship hardware will be much improved in able to stay in the competitive market.  So happy to see you again, DKT27!!!  :)

I totally disagree with you in case of Samsung. They uses cheap hardwares than chinese manufacturers alongwith lack of modern features..even A4 doesn't support USB OTG..and to expand the memory, user is forced to remove 2nd SIM (in most samsung phones).

Most Samsung phones are just like a TOY after 7-8 months of usage, it starts to hung and drinks the electricity like HELL.

From last 4-5 years, they just attracted lower class peoples because of their cheap touch screen phones, they were just pieces of crap.

It's a shame (for me) that Samsung will manufacture this snapdragon 820 chip. I will definitly aviod this one.

I am using Xiaomi and it gives me a smoother, better experiance than any of Samsung Crap.

In case of LG, i totally agree with you..

Well, Samsung makes cheap, toy like phones. But, how this is relevant to its Semiconductor Foundry business? These are independent wings of Samsung Group. They give chip fabrication services to the Fabless companies like Qualcomm,  Broadcom, Mediatek etc. So, this is not conclusive that, "Samsung makes low quality phones, so Chip made by them is also that bad". Even Samsung mobile's top rival Apple inc. is still making their A Series SOC from Samsung alongside TSMS, as TSMS cannot alone meet their (Apple's) volume demand.

did you noticed that, specially inside bracket :-

It's a shame (for me) that Samsung will manufacture this snapdragon 820 chip. I will definitely avoid this one.

this one is my personal opinion and choice. if mostly products of a brand are CRAP, i will never choose any single good (even if it's best) product from that BRAND.

It's my personal choice.

well, thanks for shaking my knowledge.

here is something for you :

Your Beloved Apple is stealing technologies from others :

The jury found that Apple’s A7, A8 and A8X processors, found in the iPhone 5s, 6 and 6 Plus, as well as several versions of the iPad, violated the patent.

WARF sued Apple in January 2014 alleging infringement of its 1998 patent on a “predictor circuit,” developed by computer science professor Gurindar Sohi and three of his students.

Apple claimed that WARF deserved less than even the $110 million the foundation settled with Intel after suing that company in 2008 over the same patent. Of course Intel did not have to be dragged to court and admitted that it might have used the idea.

Yes, I read all of the comments from the very first day; and I also do have disagreement with DKT27 about the hardware quality. But, if you read my comment with cool mind, there I only tried to say, an "Apple" should be compared with another "Apple", not with an "Orange".

Anyways, sorry, if I hit you (but unintentionally) by any means in my comment.
