The Linux Mint team, through Clement Lefebvre, had the great pleasure of announcing just a few minutes ago, January 9, 2016, the immediate availability for download of the final release of Linux Mint 17.3 "Rosa" Xfce and KDE editions.

In this article we will share with you the features that have been implemented in the Linux Mint 17.3 “Rosa” Xfce Edition operating system, which is based on Canonical's Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) OS, built around the Xfce 4.12 desktop environment, and supported with software updates and security patches until year 2019.

Here's what's new in Linux Mint 17.3 "Rosa" Xfce

Prominent features of Linux Mint 17.3 "Rosa" Xfce include support for the Openbox and Compiz window manager, support for the Compton compositing manager, instant switching of window managers, along with screen-tearing prevention thanks to Compton, which is installed by default.

Furthermore, two new commands have been added in this release, "wm-detect" for viewing information about running window or compositing managers, and "wm-recovery" for restoring the default window manager. Various in-house built applications received many improvements in Linux Mint 17.3 "Rosa" Xfce as well.

Among these, we can mention Software Sources, which is now more reliable, faster, responsive, and fully up to date, Update Manager, which can now perform more checks than before, Driver Manager, which appears to be more robust than before, and the Login Screen (MDM - Mint Display Manager), which supports HiDPI displays.

Linux Mint 17.3 "Rosa" Xfce is powered by Ubuntu 14.04 LTS' Linux 3.19 kernel, but users will be able to install Linux kernel 4.2 from the repositories, which should offer improved hardware support. The Orca screen reader and OpenVPN client have been insalled by default, and several apps were updated, including LibreOffice 5 and Inxi.
