Batu69
Windows 8 officially reaches end of support on January 12 Windows 8 was launched in October 2012 with much fanfare, but in the end, this proved to be just another flop in Microsoft's history. Often referred to as “the second Vista,” Windows 8 will reach end of support next week on Tuesday, so all users who are still running it must upgrade to 8.1 as soon as possible. Although it sounds weird to see a Windows version discontinued after only three years, it actually makes sense because Microsoft considers Windows 8.1 a service pack. So it applies the same strategy as in the case of Windows 7, which got its very own service pack too. Windows 8.1 is offered free of charge to everyone on Windows 8, so the upgrade can be performed at any time by simply downloading the files from Microsoft's servers. If you do that, support is automatically guaranteed until January 10, 2023, the date when Microsoft end extended support (mainstream support ends on January 9, 2018). The Windows 10 upgrade At the same time, once you install Windows 8.1, you have another option and can upgrade to Windows 10, also free of charge and also with just a few clicks. Windows 10 will receive support until October 14, 2025, with mainstream support ending on October 13, 2020. The good news is that, at this point, only a few users are still on Windows 8, with third-party statistics showing that the operating system launched in 2012 is only running on some 2 percent of the PCs across the world. This means that it shouldn't take too long until everyone updates to Windows 8.1, but the biggest problem here is to make people aware of the end of support date. Microsoft isn't yet showing any EOL notifications on Windows 8, but the company could start doing this in order to make sure that everyone stays secure. January 12, 2016, will be the last time Windows 8 receives security patches from Microsoft. Article source

Holmes
Support for windows eight is ending not eight point one or eight point one update one there not going to end support for windows eight completely. I dont care that there doing it there following the same procedure they have been following for years they ended support for windows seven and windows seven service pack one was fine. They made it so you cant visit windows update in windows xp if you only have windows xxp and windows xxp service pack one you have to have windows xp service pack two to visit windows update in windows xp. Softpedia has a misleading header this isnt funny I wish these website article authors knew how to post a article correctly *FACEPALM*.

CODYQX4
Shortest OS support ever. At least we won't have any more 12 year old OS and browsers that need to be purged from this earth that hold the world back 10 years. Supporting old IE is probably second to Congress in most wasteful actions detrimental to better productivity. If you argue 8.1 is a new system, then 8.0 died in record time. Not that any sane person with the knowledge to upgrade would stay on 8.0, since it sucked so hard even the garbage that is 8.1 improved.

Windows 8 came out 3 years ago Windows 8.1 came out 2 years ago it only took 1 year for them to release a service update. Windows 7 came out 6 years ago Service Pack 1 came out 4 years ago it took them 2 years to release a service update. End of support for win 7 with no SP1 was 3 years ago . Vista ,Windows 7 and Windows 8 has 10 years support regradless as long as you installed the required service updates. 8.1 = SP1 I see no difference really support for both ended a year latter And really you won a prize when you upgrade to windows 10? Were they have to count every device phones , Xbox and PCs as a person so the can say they have 200 million users witch its 200 million users combined . Not 200 million pc users . LeeSmithG
Micro$oft, produce an operating system for a desktop, like seven (7) and XP. This will have improvements, better security, be faster and a better G.U.I. Micro$oft, produce a tiled system for tablets, touch screens and if people want it on their PC's then so be it. Then you won't waste our time and your money offering free upgrades as you planked out again! Windows seven (7) pro is da bomb. I aint changing it, if I do I am off to Linux. steven36
Microsoft is a lot of could of ,should of, would of , any more . The new way they do things is very different from 6 years ago. Now when they make and O/S they make it work on there game console , there phones and pcs . Surface 3 and now Surface 4 laptop and tablet thingy seems to be were they make the most sales on windows now days. While they had some success with 200 million users , phones , Xbox and PCs combined giving it away free. in the business world hardly no one has bought its harly made a mark were people actuality buy it. Any sane It knows better than to use Windows 10 on there network it will casue too many problems .
wacm1979
Well I guess it is one way of prodding the user to upgrade to the next version. In a way it is good I guess as it ensures the user is still moved to a platform that is actively getting strong support on security and some new features.
