steven36 Posted January 3, 2016 Share Posted January 3, 2016 Border patrol drones are vulnerable to GPS spoofing attacks The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency are reporting on incidents where drug traffickers have hacked unmanned air vehicles (UAVs, drones) in order to illegally and secretly cross the US-Mexican border. UAVs have become a common presence in the US military, but they have also spread to other US law enforcement agencies like local police and border patrol. Unlike their military counterparts, which cost millions of dollars, the drones used by other law enforcement agencies are much smaller, due to the smaller budgets allocated to the acquisition of such vehicles. CBP drones are vulnerable to GPS spoofing attacks Because of this, various standard drone modules had to be removed. One of them is a module that ensures the drone's security against a certain type of attack: GPS spoofing. GPS spoofing is a trivial cyber-attack, which relies on sending GPS receivers fake GPS data. Each UAV has a GPS receiver, used to receive data from off-orbit satellites and navigate along the border, watching for illegal crossers. Drug traffickers have quickly figured this out, and using GPS spoofing techniques are sending UAVs wrong coordinates, made to look like coming from an authentic source. The drone, receiving wrong coordinates, corrects course and leaves its normal patrol area, going to the section it thinks it should be at, based on the wrong coordinates. Once the drone leaves the area of the GPS jammer&spoofing device, it then tries to correct again, going back to its proper patrol area. It follows this back and forwards process until it remains out of fuel and returns to base, or the traffickers safely crossed the border and turn off their jammers. High cost of anti-spoofing equipment leaves drones exposed The only way to prevent such scenarios from happening is by using anti-GPS-spoofing hardware within the drone's makeup. As Michael Buscher, CEO of Vanguard Defense Industries told Defense One reporters, this is a very costly module, and also very bulky. Adding such equipment to a drone is not only very expensive but also affects the drone's flight time, something which both the DHS and CBP are not willing to accept. Right now, the only way to plug these security holes is for the DHS to wait for technology to advance and cut down on its manufacturing prices. dMog Posted January 3, 2016 Share Posted January 3, 2016 the trump wall is not needed nor is any more money required for law enforcement...what is needed is for the army to take over patrol duties of the police and border patrols so the police can go back to devoting 100% of their time to other crimes in stead of stopping a tiny insignificant percentage of illegal crossings on specific area...id the army ever was actually properly patrol/defend the area.... crossings in that area would drop 100% over night because they could tighten up that border so tight a fart could not get across...the political will is not there to do so...even by the showman/ three ring circus act that is donald trump.... The border patrol does a really poor job in the USA a group of vigilantes are based at the Arizona border catching the drug cartels mules and turning them over to the border patrol . In Mexico they also had vigilantes tell the Mexican government got them to join in with there government .The Mexican government is paid off by the cartels so there no help at all. As far as the Army doing such on US soil is against the law. Back in the late 80s, early 90s, when the US Army was beginning to downsize, 5 Corps in Germany was being deactivated and the colors returned to CONUS. At that time one of the proposals being briefed by the Pentagon was to take those combat troops (2 Infantry Divisions and 1 Armor Division) and place them on the Mexican border. In 1989, the US Army created Joint Task Force 6 (JTF6) located on the back side of Biggs Army Airflield (part of Fort Bliss) next to the El Paso Intelligence Center (EPIC) which was a joint intel/ops center for the DEA, Secret Service, FBI, and ATF. JTF6 flew missions using high tech aircraft and helicopters over Mexico and South America, primarily tracking drugs. If those units previously mentioned had been redeployed in the early 90s to the border they would have tied in with the intel being obtained from those organizations and effectively closed the border, not only to drugs, but to anyone attempting to illegally cross. However, under Bill Clinton (it wasn't sex and I can't find my ass with both hands) he was so intent on 'balancing the budget' that he actually deactivated those units and cut the Army all those positions plus deactivating the 7th Infantry Division at Fort Ord, California. He further went on to cancel military contracts for Humvees and armor vests, among other military necessities. One group comprised of 106 soldiers including 10 pilots, had two armor vests total, had no Humvees (they were forced to drive Chevy sedans from a GAO Motor Pool) though they did receive training on maintenance and operation of a single Humvee provided by a maintenance team over two days, and had no helicopters for the pilots to fly. Bill Clinton was also the idiot who had an opportunity to take out Usama Bin Laden and did not. Imagine what a different world this would be if he had done what he should have done instead of getting blow jobs in the Oval Office from young interns who were in a drugged stupor caused by their positions to the seat of a nation's power.
