Google ending Gmail? Google Starts Migrating Users To a All New Inbox

Google tests potential Gmail replacement, Inbox by Gmail

It seems that Google is planning  a quiet funeral for its veritable Gmail service. Since past weeks users have been receiving a notification by Google that its experimental "Inbox By Gmail’ service has now replaced their Gmail account.

The pop-up appears when Inbox users login and states “Thanks for trying Inbox! To make it easier we’ve updated Gmail to redirect you here”.  Even the old familiar inbox.google.com url has disappeared and now Inbox instead resides at gmail.com.

Inbox by Gmail, which Forbes reports offers more tech-savvy features like smart recognition of photos and documents, Google is now giving them the option to opt out. Some Gmail users are reportedly signing in and being redirected to inbox.google.com and given the option to stay.

Forbes also notes that Google has given the option of staying in the old format to users.  Any user who doesn’t want Inbox to replace Gmail has the option to “Turn it Off” which pushes both services back to their dedicated domains.

Inbox was introduced in October 2014 and Google seems to hold that Inbox is now ready for actual deployment among Gmail users. Upto now Inbox by Gmail was seen to run concurrently with Gmail but now it seems, Google see Inbox as a replacement for Gmail rather than the separate service.

Interestingly, another website, 9to5Google says that Google has been performing this quiet migration for some time. And the results have been quite positive for Inbox by Gmail. So there you have it, sometime by end of 2016 we may have to say goodbye to Gmail.

RIP Gmail!

The title sounds so scary and clickbaity, as if major changes are happening there, it's a frikken popup and optional ffs, that's all!

Most likely they sent out random invites to "spread the word" about Inbox, since when is that new? Almost all bigger companies do that internally.

rebranding ?

Not likely I guess. What was wrong with Gmail branding? That was fine. Now this 'inbox' sounds like some instant messaging app

I can see them wanting unification but I despise Google Inbox.

It was designed for people who have no organization and must be coddled like it's a social network and just "Snooze" email to not feel they're overwhelmed because they are in capable of scheduling on their own. It's a trend towards email for dummies, if email was complicated as is. The problem is people letting shit pile up and signing up for piles of junk.

As long as they allow IMAP I don't care.

i doubt inbox will replace gmail.  that's absurd.  inbox has limited functionality.  you can't select all messages at once ... and probably other things too.  and you can't set a background image.  IT SUCKS

I hope not. I've tried Inbox and I think it's dumb as hell. I don't like it and I don't want to migrate to it. Leave me alone with GMail the way it is Google. Seriously. I don't need pseudo-innovations. I want e-mail that works and as it is, GMail works absolutely perfectly for me.

Google Inbox sucks, it is just as bad as Google Wave, and we see where that went & Gmail is still around!

This seems to be about webmail access or their apps ??

I use IMAP and email clients - because webmail on the whole generally sucks.

I guess folks who insist upon using webmail might be upset about such changes though.

I like webmail because I spend a lot of time in browser and I have a new mail notifier so I'm notified about new e-mails instantly and I can also access them instantly without opening extra app for it. IMAP is an option, but I had bad experience with it where client just went ballistic and fucked up all my e-mails.
