Batu69
They warned you and warned you and warned you TENS OF THOUSANDS of ATMs and PoS machines in the UK could become vulnerable to attack next month when support for Windows XP Embedded ends. The Extended Support Cycle for XP draws to a close on 12 January 2016, 21 months after the end of the rest of the XP family, after which time any machines still running it will be unprotected against vulnerabilities and malware. There was a general feeling that users of XP Embedded would sort themselves out by the time Windows XP reached end-of-life. However, it appears that for many, tomorrow never comes and 65,000 UK ATMs are still estimated to be running the outgoing operating system.“This presents major problems for the banks and puts their customers’ cash at risk, which is the last thing anyone wants as they check their accounts after a costly Christmas and early sales," said Kerry Davies, CEO at security firm Abatis.“The problem is made worse by the fact that traditional defences have been shown to be increasingly inadequate at stopping the latest malware attacks.”Cash machines are never connected directly to the internet, but conmen intent on taking your cash are getting more sophisticated, and at any time you are only ever one inside job away from a major breach.65,000 cash machines don't get fixed overnight, and a number of companies are offering bespoke protection packages as an alternative to the notoriously expensive Extended-extended support that Microsoft offers.Microsoft was said to be charging $600 per machine to continue support when Server 2013 reached end-of-life earlier this year, and the company has little sympathy for firms using an operating system that it has been trailing as end-of-life for many years.Windows XP reached end-of-life on 6 April 2014, and the UK government paid Microsoft approximately £5m for extended support, while a Freedom of Information Act request showed that 35,000 Metropolitan Police machines were still running XP as of April this year.NHS systems are also said to be widely behind on upgrades, and hundreds of individual departmental systems require bespoke attention. The government confirmed in May that it was no longer paying Microsoft for extended support.Windows XP was finally usurped by Windows 8.1 as the world's second most popular operating system this month, but still claims nearly 12 percent of the global market.News source

steven36
They can use XP as long as they wont i could care less as long I don't have too .Windows malware has always been much worse on x86 XP than on newer windows even when it had updates . XP I know this from experience . XP was back when people needed 3 or 4 programs just to try to keep there system clean. So them dropping updates just made a already really vulnerable O/S even worse . :P :ph34r:This article was before they even stooped updates .Windows XP Malware: 6X As Bad As Windows 8http://www.informationweek.com/windows-xp-malware-6x-as-bad-as-windows-8/d/d-id/1112122?Even if you could get updates that's not saying much .
