Valve data shows Windows 10 adoption is skyrocketing

Steam share stats for November 2015

Windows 10 adoption has slowed down a little bit in terms of global figures, but as far as gaming is concerned, Microsoft’s new operating system is growing at a more than satisfying pace.

New statistics provided to us by Valve’s Steam gaming platform show that Windows 10 not only significantly improved its share last month but it was also the only Windows version that actually recorded an increase in November. Windows 7, Windows XP and Windows 8.1 all lost users, figures show.

Right now, Windows 7 continues to be the preferred choice for Steam gamers, but statistics point out that its share is rapidly declining while, at the same time, Windows 10 is gaining fast.

Windows, the dominant leader

The 64-bit version of Windows 7 thus maintains the leading spot with 35.63 percent, down 1.64 percent from the month before, while Windows 10 not only remains on the second place but also gets very close to its predecessor. A total of 28.81 percent of the machines running Steam last month were powered by Windows 10, an increase of 2.39 percent from October.

Windows 8.1 64-bit is next on the list with 16.50 percent, down 0.96 percent, while the 32-bit version of Windows 7 remains on the fourth place with 7.84 percent, also down but only 0.35 percent.

Overall, Windows is still number one on Steam with an overwhelming share of 95.26 percent, a decrease of 0.19 percent from the month before. But Windows 10 surely helps this adoption, and even bigger figures are expected next month.

For example, the growth posted by Windows 10 this month was more than twice the Steam share of all Linux distributions currently on the market, which are still powering less than 1 percent (0.98%) of the gaming systems on the market. Mac OS X is currently at 3.64 percent, up 0.15 percent last month.

They are forcing Win10 down everyone's throats and then they brag how succesful it is. If you force install Ubuntu on top of WIndows 7 and 8.x and it would suddenly become a freaking success story. Like wtf...

People at Microsoft must be high or they can't count. What is really not funny is that they count every install but not every rollback. Nothing like padding your statistics. Personally I have done over 100 rollbacks for people and restored at least 50 systems that bricked during the update. Not to mention the several hundred computers that I have turned off updates, removed windows 10 files, installed firewalls and security software on, and made sure that the users were never bothered by Microsoft again.

Looks like Microsoft's main Windows 10 market, Windows 7 and 8.1 users, still have a combined share of just under 60%, more than double Windows 10.

That's a hell of a lot that have resisted Microsoft's nagging and bullying to upgrade.

It's rumoured that mentioning "Windows 10 market share" at Microsoft is now a sackable offence. :)

Really Not that many people buy pcs to game no way . I got better things I can waste my money on.

PC gaming can't even begin to compare with console gaming as a whole, but if you narrow it down to current-gen consoles online, then no, PCs still can't compare.

Consoles are very easy for kids and casual gamers to buy and hook up. PC gaming is quite complicated sometimes and most people dont have enough time for things like that. But a lot of people who take gaming as a real hobby often go for high-powered PC's.

PC hardware is more flexible and games developed for it are more advanced both graphics and gameplay wise.

So its safe to say more people are console gamers, Its easy for kids because they usually play off of their parents HD setup and the price of consoles are appealing to parents. A lot of people also have HD setups as sort of a standard and buying a console would be much easier for them.

PC's for gaming are a lot of money at a time the economy is not doing good its much cheaper to buy a console . There are a lot of pcs gamers Im not denying this fact but really little research is out there about how many they really are out of all the windows users how many really game?

Most serious PC gamers who spends a lot of money on it most of them is going to upgrade there cards to support DX 12 . Windows 8 or 7 cant give you this gaming benefit . So of course they would chose Windows 10 . ;)

PC gaming isn't that much expensive if you think it through..most cracked games can't be used in the new consoles so you only have to pay for the original game to play. also even if you decide to buy the original game..for example in order to use online and multiplayer features..then you will have to pay a monthly fee too (PSN, XBOX live etc.)

so it's not so expensive to become a PC gamer, it's actually the cheapest way to play new video games. after all we all need a computer in our homes so why not make it a little more stronger so that we can play video games in them too. :)

Its just like videos bro some of us pirate them but more people pay too watch them . If more people were to pirate games than buy them the industry would go broke and would very little new games Most of the time people with extra money have done bought the game before it even gets cracked . Because unless you crack you’re own you’re depending on someone else to do it for you. I don’t like being co dependent on anything . Because it could or could not come. You could get a virus installing games cracked from p2p its happened before . Game cracking is not half as reliable as it was in 2013 . Most have got out of cracking on the web because cash for download sites sell there work so you have wait on the scene to get a trustful source.

of course it's going to grow, even if they don't push it down people's throats. it's only natural as more hardware supporting directx12 appears and more software requiring said hardware is created. and that's not only games, directx is used in everything. video, audio input/output, any HID (from joysticks to text to speech to biometric scanners), network protocols, midi devices, all interface with the hardware via directx so you might ask yourself: what IS windows then? is it just a wrapper for directx? i'll leave that for homework.

Most serious PC gamers...

what? i thought it was all fun and games!

In videos this will never matter it seems as DX11 , 9 or even Video Acceleration for Linux works just fine for 1080p .Netfilx and others have banned streaming 4k videos trough computers. X265 is mostly just a pirate thing and plays ok without Video Acceleration if you have 4 cores or higher . Video Acceleration x264 is the stranded and is optimized on most all pcs higher than XP. But more and more just use a blu-player and other things and watch it trough there TV . Its much cheaper than a computer for one can watch videos trough a TV. and download it on any device .

I have had great success with almost every build of windows 10 in clean installs, F*ck upgrades they for simple people and it's EXTREMELY naive to think no other OS is used to spy on us the fact THEY ALL DO even XP did, does still, and nothing is secure nothing ever will be 1's and 0's are far to easy to manipulate it can never be secure unless it's true AI defending your code at a pace no man or woman could compete ever well unless we become singularity man & machine is one by the time this happens we will have WW3 on our hands and global polution and climate change with solar flares knocking out digital equipment permanantly evolution is also destruction in disguise. I could give a F*CK less if they spy on me I don't do anything illegal or worth a sh*t to go after SO stop bitching and stop stealing and buy what you like after you try it PERIOD!!!

sigh...when i say "video" i don't mean movie playback. i mean hardware acceleration of visual elements as a 3d surface/canvas where information is displayed. such as a window's chrome (that's not google's browser, sheesh. it's the parent object of every form. aka window)

sure video decoding such as .h264 is decompressed there and benefit from the frame buffer as well, but most importantly vertex caches: where everything is drawn and texture caches: the actual visual elements, you want all that stored in the gpu where it's going to be used to draw the screeen 60 times per second rather than your ram or even worse: the page file. finally shaders...a lot of things nowadays are done through shaders. more efficient for specific use, easier to optimize certain operations on the fly etc. so you want a proper shader cache to store that, otherwise it's just going to be swapping in and out of ram all the time. now here's the catch: there are dx9 shaders, dx10 shaders, dx11 shaders and dx12 shaders. and you need the proper combination of hardware/os to run each...oops. things are backwards compatible of course, but not the other way around.

regarding 4k video, gpus this generation are still not really 4k capable. to play a game (any game) in 4k you need a minimum of 2x gtx970 on sli...assuming you own a 4k display that is. all those amazing screen setups you see come from 4x sli'd gtx980. hopefully that will change in the upcoming breed of cards

Yes that's right but it's not the same in all countries. EU? well most of them don't even dare to talk about cracked games, say this based on my experience. lol

if you are a cracked game player you definitely should know who are the main cracking groups so you won't download viruses instead of cracks. it's very simple.

btw you still haven't answered the most basic question of all time

do you speak English the same way as you write it? :)

DX 12 is the best thing about windows 10 and most non gamers and some gamers that don’t have the extra money to upgrade cards are using DX 11 are upgrading to Win10 and cannot even reap the benefits from it . In fact Windows10 has been nothing but BSOD for most because of driver issues etc. Because older computers are not designed for Win10 really . This was the big turn off for me . But even DX 12 benefits me as a PS4 gamer DX12 type multithreading designs also benefits PS4.

Now that Sony unlocked its 7th core in a SDK update for PS4 its more powerful than ever .

What does this has to do with cheese in china? Most people that console game already has a console so it don’t cost them nothing so how is buying a card cheaper ? Fact is PC /Hardware sales down to a rock bottom low . Even hardware sales are down for consoles . People are using what they already have . Ive always had a game console of some type since the 80s . :P You buy a card for you’re PC then M$ comes out with the next version of DX and you’re card becomes obsolete so you need a new one . Just like most windows 10 users need one right now. I bought a pc with windows 8 DX 11 now the drivers are legacy just a few years latter. PS4 you can get a console for $299.99 for the holidays and comes with a game two games too chose from . what kind of PC you going get for that ? One that’s not made for gaming I can tell you that . ;)

Not everyone is used to console controllers thats why I stopped buying console games its easier to use a mouse and keyboard and pc hardware sales are not down where do you get that figure from pull it outta your ass? I spent one thousand dollars on my computer and wont have to upgrade for years. You cant say fact is without giving a source that shows its a fact lawls. I was asked by my aunt tina to stand in line so my cousins can get a playstation four I was surprised to see if wasnt a very big line. I go to microcenter every now and then and when I go there always packed and that is a fact (saw it with my own eyes). The amount of money im going to spend upgrading my computer in the next few years equals same amount buying a new console each time a new one comes out. Im going to have a computer not going to have to buy one only have to upgrade a part or two. If I won a xbox threesixty or a playstation four I would have to buy games for it the games that come with them are ok if you get one thats good your lucky. Each game costs sixty dollars do they ever have sales for console games I cant remember if they do or not. Best part is computer games you can try before you buy playing a demo if you like it buy it if you dont dont I did that with the thief series. You cant try console game before you buy them. I prefer computers and computers are going to be running everything in the future are consoles going to be running anything no there going to provide digital stimulation thats it.

Why are we talking about gaming consoles in a windows topic lawls? that is just steam hardware survey doesnt mean its junk steam is very popular and is a reputable source for this. I wonder is the use of windows ten going up because users are giving in fighting them tired of saying no who knows.

Any one that really games uses a controller not a mouse . My friend just built a gaming PC to get a good one you’re going need to buy much more than just a card unless you already have a gaming pc and just need a card to upgrade to DX12 . Fact is with consoles you don’t need to buy new card at all , But with PCs to benefit from DX 12 you do. The reason my friend built a new one there old one wore out . And they build pcs after awhile pcs ware out and you need to replace it all. Or if you don’t build just buy a new one. I use to take pcs to the shop and they charged me for parts and labour in the early 2000s .so I learned how to do it myself .It was easy for me to learn as I already knew how to fix other things electronic . This pc I'm on i fixed it with spare parts I had laying around when it messed up . :)

Have a good day im going to switch on my windows pc and update all my software . :D

I really game and I use a mouse and keyboard. You dont need a directx twelve video card unless you plan on playing a directx twelve game (I know in order to use directx in windows ten you need a directx twelve video card). Xbox has the red ring of death and some have died which is wear and tear. I didnt have to take our computer to the shop my brother fixed it for us. I learned from my brother and then went to school and taught myself alot and now I fix my computer and my moms computer. For gaming computers are always going to win.
