Microsoft intentionally yanks latest Windows 10 release from its download server

Without explanation, Microsoft has removed the just-released November update (version 1511) from the download page it offers to the general public. The media creation tool now downloads the initial release of Windows 10 instead.

When Microsoft released Windows 10 version 1511 earlier this month, the company also updated the installer files it delivers via a free, downloadable media creation tool.

Company executives even recommended the tool to Windows 10 users who were too impatient to wait for the upgrade to arrive via Windows Update.

That upgrade option worked as advertised for more than a week. Today, however, the new files have been pulled and the media creation tool instead installs the July 2015 (build 10240) release.

The sudden change didn't come with any official explanation. The only documentation is a line added to the download page, warning, "These downloads cannot be used to update Windows 10 PCs to the November update (Version 1511)."

The ISO files for version 1511 are still available for MSDN subscribers.

My tests confirm that upgrading using this tool no longer delivers version 1511 but instead upgrades Windows 7 and 8.1 PCs to the original Windows 10 release.

I've asked Microsoft for comment and will update this story when I have more details.

Update: It appears it this change was intentional as Microsoft only wants users to download 10586 via Windows Update.

My Acer Desktop updated v10210 via Windows Update to v1511 without problem

however Dell Laptop v10210 has continually failed to complete the update and

Apparently there's a very big issue with bitlocker encryption on it.

Activating BitLocker with hardware encryption (not software), meaning a self-encrypting drive (SED) using eDrive, commonly found on newer SSD drives, is no longer possible following a clean install of build 10586 (Parameter is incorrect -code 0x80070057).

I'm 99.9% this is a major reason they pulled the ISO off. Unless they only want one RTM?

I don't understand why Microsoft decide to pull the newer version, then ask its customers to go through the trouble of downloading GBs of file right after installing 10240, in order to upgrade to the latest version. WTF, Microsoft? Why you decides to deliberately create trouble for users who want to use the latest OS?

Update: A Microsoft spokesperson says the change is intentional:

The November update was originally available via the MCT tool, but we've decided that future installs should be through Windows Update. People can still download Windows 10 using the MCT tool if they wish. The November update will be delivered via Windows Update.

Frankly, that explanation is pretty hard to accept. Nine days after the company encouraged people to use this tool for upgrades, it's pulled on a weekend, with no explanation? And if the decision is truly that "future installs should be through Windows Update," why interrupt this update after untold numbers, probably millions, have already downloaded the setup files?

PLENTY of links out there if one wants 1155 and many are legit ones. i have all versions now in media form of 1155 including usb drives and discs i also have all versions in iso form. so if you want it just get it elsewhere you do not have to download it from the mct tool anyway even if you want a usb drive there are just as easy ways to make them.

I had my Win10 Automatic Updates, set to notify and not download, via Local Group Policy. Just last night I decided that I wanted to upgrade to the November TH2 update, but to my surprise it was gone. I thought I broke something, but now I know that they pulled it. Is it still safe to install if I don't use BitLocker? Does anyone have a link to the version 1511 .ISO from MSDN or another safe host? Thanks in advance.

I don't understand the need to whack the ISO version. I cannot tell you how many PCs I have successfulyl upgrade to build 1511 using the ISO that failed through WU, either by the update physically not appearing or saying something stupid like it failing half way through lol.

You're suffering through field testing. It's not ready for production environments. Hang tight, 2nd quarter 2016 is when to think about serious upgrades... until then download it on a test rig and learn your way around. Period.

Just a heads up guys. It looks like they also pulled the update from Windows Update as well. Makes sense because one system I went to upgrade today did not show the 1511 update at all. I forced it with an ISO upgrade but still.

I think some users are facing various kinds of issues with this build due to which it happened. The install.wim still shows Technical Preview.Many kind of weird issues are being reported with this build.

Use Google Translate and select the edition for example, windows 10 (for windows 10 Home+Pro) ,then English for EN-US and finally x32/x64 as per requirement as usual.Hope it may help for those who need windows 10 Pro Build 10586 Version 1511 .

What i feel they YANKED 1511 because in this new BuILD they have introduced KEY ACTIVATION of windows 7/8/8.1

due to this people might be buying windows 7 Cheaper and using the key directly to install 1511 and activate

OR

People using windows 7/8.1 LEAKED keys to activate windows 10 ...so might be there wrong move here

they are ROLLING OUT in WU bcz its either activated or TRIAL copy or INSIDER BUILD

i feel the main reason is this ,thats y MICROSOFT silently pulled and didn't answer to any of the question

Well, if M$ has really decided to release further Windows 10 updates through WU, then they certainly are moron. How can they think, people would be able to download 2.5+ GB via WU? Because, not everyone is sitting on Mbps pipe, majority of people are still having 1 or 2 Mbps connectivity. The ISO(s) are handy to download on slower connection and installation.
