Speed up Windows 10 boot up with this simple tweak

Because I have a super-fast PC with a large SSD as the system drive, Windows 10 boots up really quickly for me. The days of waiting 5 minutes or so for Windows to get to a usable state -- as was sometimes the case in the past -- are long gone, thankfully.

But if you find Windows 10 is taking too long to boot up for you, there’s a setting you can apply which can speed things up significantly. Even if you have no complaints with how quickly Windows 10 loads, it’s still worth applying this (if it isn't on already) because it will make a difference.

This trick doesn’t require third-party software, or some weird registry tweak -- it’s a feature built directly into Windows.

Called Fast Start-up, the feature is similar to Hibernate (but faster) in that when you shutdown your PC the loaded kernel and drivers are copied to a special file on your hard drive called Hiberfil.sys before the PC powers off. When you switch your PC back on again, Windows looks for this file and, if it finds it, loads it straight into memory without performing any boot checks. In other words you get into Windows in a fraction of the time.

To turn the feature on, click Start and type Power options. Launch this control panel and click Choose what the power buttons do. Click on Change settings that are currently unavailable and check the Turn on fast start-up option (this may already be enabled).

Fast Start-up isn’t actually a new feature, it was first introduced back in Windows 8.

If Windows 10 still doesn't load quickly enough for you, you should consider a clean install as that will definitely make a difference.

Only mobile toys need hibernating anyway, full computers only need RAM. ^_^

...and a SSD.

You might be surprised bud. Ever since I stuck windows on an SSD everything runs so much better. Even on my old 5 year old laptop. It smashes through tasks with an SSD. Just sayin

As I said already... Only FULL computers! No laptops, no notebooks, no tablets etc. :D

So if I ever use sleep mode and wake-up then the slowest part is the monitor (needs 1-2 seconds).

But I agree, for your laptop that helps a lot because too less RAM and uses much virtual memory (via HD/SSD).

Im every day surprised of the speed of my new machine ; its a matter of new (modern) hardware together.

So, SSD-,32GB RAM-,FAST Processor i7-,a very fine Z97-K motherboard with USB3.1 and a good cooling system. This all on a fine(fast) tuned Win7 Pro,and its making computing just AWSOME......

Good machine!

Hopefully also a good GPU and disabled hibernate & virtual memory...

Yes,also a good GPU and disabled hibernate & virtual memory,disabled system-restore etc.

All these issues (and a lot more!) are done with "fine-tuning" of Windows.....

My new laptop is faster than most desktops and doesn't hibernate. i7-6700k, 64 GB, Nvidia GTX 980, 2 x 2TB Samsung 850 SSD (Windows 7 Pro)

Well bud in my defense. My main rig has 3 storage devices. 2 are magnetic and 1 is an SSD. Windows sits on the SSD while my extended programs sit on magnetic secondary storage. I currently have my system to page to the SSD even though I have 16GB of RAM because it still helps in certain scenarios and I can safely say that the whole thing is running a lot better and smoother since I jumped to an SSD in this case. I think the performance increase is a variable based on other factors though.

You have for sure a great rig and enough RAM!

Maybe also try this:

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\DisablePagingExecutive = 1

That makes it even smoother! B)

Good to know bud.

Thanks for the tip
