Windows 10 Threshold 2 Automatically Reinstalls All Previously-Removed Apps

Some claim the update also resets default apps

Microsoft rolled out Threshold 2 earlier this week as the first major update for Windows 10 that comes with significant improvements for both the operating system itself and the pre-installed apps.

But as far as the latter part is concerned, it turns out that Threshold 2 is actually making some changes to the app lineup that some people might not be aware of.

A post on reddit reveals that Threshold is resetting the default apps on Windows 10 computers that are installing the updates, although such a change isn't mentioned during the setup process.

But at the same time, Threshold 2 also reinstalls the apps that you previously removed, such as Xbox and Edge, all of which come with the operating system. Windows 10 ships with a series of pre-installed apps, and users can remove them with PowerShell commands, but after installing Threshold 2, all of them are brought back on your PC.

Some apps no longer working

As we told you yesterday, Threshold 2 also removes desktop software during the installation process, but only if any app is flagged as incompatible.

Microsoft spent a lot of time trying to get all apps to run smoothly on Windows 10, but it turns out that software incompatibilities still exist in Threshold 2, so if any program is marked as incompatible, it's automatically removed during the setup process.

A full list of the incompatible apps is not yet available, but Speccy, CPU-Z, and many others are said to be unsupported on Threshold 2 for now. Of course, it's all a matter of time until their developers actually fix these compatibility issues, but for the moment, there doesn't seem to be a way to manually address errors.

Threshold 2 is being rolled out in stages, so until you receive the update for your PC, the chances are that some of the software compatibility issues that you might come across could actually be fixed.

Like your apps, don't install Windows 10 because it doesn't. That's what should be written but nooooo, everyone is telling you how great it is and how like the NSA it doesn't really spy on you.

Just use O&O ShutUp 10 to turn off all the spying and telemetry settings and disable Cortana. You can also use Ultimate Tweaker 4 Windows 10 (just google it) I'm not posting links I'm too lazy, and tweak W10 to remove shit you don't need like Touch Keyboard input, Cortana, all the Spying crap (disabled via group policy) remove OneDrive if you don't use that shit. It's a lot of work to remove all the bullshit but it can be done.

Also to remove the W10 apps that you cannot remove like Xbox, and People and all the other useless shit, just download CCleaner. You can remove then permanently via CCleaner Free, piece of cake. Only thing is this article says you can remove Edge, well I haven't found a tweak yet to remove Edge from my W10 test machine, so I need a source to see if it can be removed.

Also there is a reg hack to use the old Windows XP/Vista/7/8 Photo Viewer as default instead of the gay photo app. If you are good and fast with computers you can tweak and remove all this bloatware and garbage and make it useable within about an hours time of tweaking, so not too bad.

Lots of stuff changing in the new build.. was extremely rough on me...especially being I was trying to setup ESET when the update dropped here... I am at ends with dealing with a few things.. BUT

Yes, uninstalled apps that came with your packaging are reinstalled...

Yes, broken apps are fixed with the update...

I did and I am having a few issues with intranet networking.. seem to be working out however...

Microsoft Product activation.. went sideways all over my system.. however for some reason it snapped back into place.. however I do believe ESS may have something to do with it.. ( timing could not have been worse but at least I have the update )

Oh and almost forgot.. I had another BSOD... before the activation worked again..

Same thing happened to me. Where did you find the tokens in windows.old and how did you restore them? I made an OPA-Backup of the Windows and Office 2016 configuration just before the Threshold 2 update but am reluctant to try their restore procedure for now. Thanks.

On my setup it removed my activation (MAK) for Office 2016. I had to restore the tokens from Windows.old.

You need to go through the windows.old\system32 folder and find the spp directory. Copy that back.

If you search on here for manual backup of activation you will find detailed instructions.
