Microsoft’s recent Windows 10 security patches are causing some users headaches

Yesterday was a rather larger update day for Microsoft. Owners of the Surface 3 and Surface Pro 3 received performance-enhancing firmware updates. Several Windows 10 apps, such as Photos, Office Apps, People app and Groove Music received updates. On top of firmware and app updates, Microsoft also released a cumulative update for Windows 10 (KB3105213), users.

Unfortunately, off all the updating Microsoft did yesterday, it looks like the cumulative update released for Windows 10 is causing more issues than it was supposed to address. According to several forum post and sub-Reddit, the update causes the Outlook app in Windows 10 to crash, among other issues.

Many users are specifically pointing out that when HTML emails are opened, is when the app tends to force close on them. As of now, it’s not clear which of the specific update(s) in the cumulative Patch Tuesday update are causing the issues. ZDnet has zeroed in a possible suspect for the Outlook crashes as well as other issues users are having. MS15-115 or reflected as KB3097877 in the release notes, may be to blame. The patch is intended to fix flaws that allow remote execution of code from the way Windows handles display fonts.

It has been noted; that uninstalling KB3097877 specifically can help fix the Outlook app from crashing. Microsoft has yet to address the issues publicly, but we’re sure an update is on its way, whether its a small one to assuage users this week or the much larger one scheduled for next week remains to be seen.
