Facebook to give its employees a slow internet connection with '2G Tuesdays'

Facebook is preparing to launch a new internal program called '2G Tuesdays,' where employees of the popular social networking site will experience a total slowdown of their internet connection speed. This will be done in order for the company's employees to see how surfing the internet feels like in emerging/developing markets like India and Kenya, where the majority of internet connections are sluggish.

In a statement by a Facebook spokesperson in a report by Mashable, people are coming online on Facebook at a staggering rate in developing markets, and this is done via a 2G connection. However, with such a connection, it can take up to two minutes to download and display a webpage. With the 2G program, the company can understand better how people access Facebook with different connection speeds, which in turn can build a better experience for them.

The program will be opt-in, according to Facebook engineer Tom Alison. Once implemented, a Facebook employee upon logging in will be prompted with a message asking if they want to try out having a slow connection for one hour. "For that next hour, their experience on Facebook will be very much like the experience that millions of people around the world have on Facebook on a 2G connection," states Alison. "They're going to see the places that we need to improve our product, but they're also going to see the places where we have made a lot of progress."

Alison foresees that many employees will sign up to be a part of the program, so the company will know what the internet feels like in different places, especially where connections are slow, and be able to report issues and formulate new ideas to optimize the Facebook experience.

Back in late June, the company launched 'Facebook Lite,' for the Philippines and India, which helps people in these developing countries access the social networking site better.

Here's an even better idea:

1. Give them NO internet (which eliminates streaming, social media and YouTube. And <gasp> porno.).

2. Confiscate their smartphones. Straitjackets will be made available to those who can't handle 5 minutes of being untethered to their precious iPhones.

3. Replace the Touch-Tone® telephones with rotary-dial models. You can find them on eBay. Oh wait, you won't have Internet access so you can fill your shopping cart. Shame.

4. Skip No. 3 if Facebook got rid of its landlines. Or had no idea what they were in the first place because someone inadvertently uttered the phrase, "twisted pair."

5. Furnish each employee with an empty tin can with a tiny hole punched in the bottom, about 20 feet of cotton twine, and a wax crayon (your choice of color).

6. Watch the puzzled looks on their faces as they try to assemble a crude communications network. Or hang themselves with the twine because, by this time, they've gone without some kind of battery-powered device cradled in their hands for over 10 minutes.

7. Using Polaroid® instant-film cameras, passers-by will take photos and glue these pictures of the ensuing chaos and carnage into real photo albums to show future archaeologists hundreds of years from now what life was like in 2015. Or was it 1962? Never mind, they'll figure it out from the geological strata nearby. And, if they're lucky, dental records.

Yeah, Tuesdays are gonna be a REAL bitch around Facebook. ;)

Not good enough for me. Unplug the whole company from the world, and accidentally forget to reconnect it. Every week.

Unplug the whole company from the world,

and accidentally forget to reconnect it.

I wish it could happen, too.

I'd pull the plug myself.

Some people think though that Facebook and other social networks change people, but really people just take their mask off and reveal their true selves.. and for most people it's pretty awful, because most people are fake to the core.

Many F/B profiles are

totally Fake

while

others

are full of Lies.

Pretty schizophrenic...

A sea of people, single or couples, trying to pretend they are better than you and their life is perfect, bringing others down. Meanwhile their lives are a charade and a mess.

... and the attention-whoring, God I don't get it. When I'm around random people in public I don't even want them to notice me (I just want to go to the store and get some damn milk and get out. I'm in a hurry, I don't know you, and I probably won't like you, so don't even look at me). These idiots want 1 million strangers to see their selfies they post every 5 minutes and know every meal they ate. For what? They feel worthless unless random people who don't give a shit about them post likes on their profile? Someone, somewhere has slit their wrists over not getting any Facebook likes on a post.
