AV-TEST evaluated antivirus apps for home and corporate

AV-TEST has conducted a new in-depth research of antivirus products currently on the market to determine the apps with the highest level of protection, performance, and usability for Windows 7 home and corporate users.

The results aren’t surprising at all: Bitdefender, McAfee, and Kaspersky are still leading the charts, while Microsoft and QuickHeal are at the opposite pole of the charts.

Despite the fact that Windows 10 is already on the market, and Windows 8 has been available since 2012, Windows 7 continues to be the world’s number one desktop operating system, so AV-TEST’s decision to evaluate security solutions developed for this OS version isn’t at all surprising.

Best antivirus software for home users

Right now, Bitdefender’s antivirus is the number one security solution on the market, having obtained the maximum of 6 points in each protection, performance, and usability tests. McAfee is the runner-up with 6 points for protection, 5.5 points for performance, and 6 points for usability, while Kaspersky comes third with 5.5, 6, and 6 points, respectively.

Avira is the best-rated free antivirus product and the fourth in the charts, with 6 points for protection, 5 for performance, and 6 for usability.

Microsoft and QuickHeal scored the worst and received only 3, 5, and 6 points and 4.5, 3, and 5.5 points, respectively for the very same categories. But in the case of Microsoft, it scored the biggest improvements, increasing from 9.5 points in the last tests to 14 points this time.

As far as corporate products are concerned, Trend Micro is said to provide the best virus protection or Windows 7, with a maximum of 6 points in every test performance by the institute. Bitdefender and McAfee are the runner-ups with 5.5 points in the performance category.

The last apps in the charts are Microsoft’s, with 2.5 points for protection, 5 points for performance, and 6 points for usability, and Seqrite’s with 4 points, 2.5 points, and 5.5 points, respectively.

Dont rely on one testing site look at them all:

https://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archive/test?recent=1

Thats virus bulletin it says eset is the best out of all. How its got the most passes minimal amount of fails (which included wild list misses and false positives) minimal amount of test not entered.

http://www.av-comparatives.org/

And this one av-test. For your information virus bulletin tests the most antiviruses out of them all. In all honesty I dont look at performance if it has a EXTREMELY good detection rate I leave it running over night I dont mind and usability I have no problem using it (sounds selfish to a degree Im sorry for that not my intention). Anyone that has problems using a antivirus always has some computer literate person to help them somewhere.

I beg to differ on one aspect at the least. You still need to download its removal tool to get rid of it. In 2006 when I bought my first computer and a few months ago when I tried to flush it

from a friends newly purchased PC. It likes to stick around like dog poo underneath your shoes.

I can`t say anything about McAfee (I didn`t try / use it since 2006) - but with BitDefender (= good performance) I agree - I use it on one desktop since 2013 - it`s fast and doesn`t slow down the PC -> you should try it and see for yourself !

Another pleasant surprise was KIS2016 - it`s the lightest / fastest version from Kaspersky till now !

I tried every release of Bitdefender with many computers, and everyone slow pc down - slow internet - vmware + Bitdefender installed will make the system too slow

After you try Bitdefender try another antivirus on same system you will know how Bitdefender was made your system too slow

I bought a desktop from Argos recently and it came with McAfee preinstalled.

They also gave me a free copy of McAfee which i thought was a dvd but it just had a card inside with the serial for a online download.

So they basically gave me two free copies which i have absolutely no use for.

I thought Eset would get a mention near the top in that test .

It's kept me protected for years.

I tried Bitdefender 2016 on my laptop with SSD. I don't know if it can detect any malware that slows down my laptop or not, but Butdefender already slowed it down.

Went back to ESET.

Intel's usually got their act together I'd agree, but no one's beyond mistakes, esp. in acquisitions made in a hurry to fill a gap in the product line. Symantec hosed an formerly trusted name that'd made their company by moving it offshore. That's what makes this business so interesting - so many bad decisions keep creating opportunities.

Another pleasant surprise was KIS2016 - it`s the lightest / fastest version from Kaspersky till now !

Kaspersky is one of the Heaviest Suites among the others. Is a little light on Ram, but is very heavy on the system and slows down the machine like hell.

Even EUGENE KASPERSKY CEO, admitted on 2014 that Kaspersky is one of the Heaviest Suites on the market and they are working hard to make it lighter especially on the startup process.

Regarding protection is one of the best but regarding system sorceresses is one of the worst. I have used it personally for over 3 years

Well used to be the story with these is ESET was always in the top 5.. usually at 3rd position.. but I would state that these tests have to be compiled from different areas of testing to really be considered valid...

I am going to shock some of you who know me with this.. but I have been running my systems without protection for quite some time...

I am an ESET Smart Security fanatic who used Tenable Nessus to scan my systems.. Ran Peerblock ALL of the time, Vidalia Bundle... Closed Ports.. filtered sites.. you name it..

as well as some other areas which I used to protect like fort knox...including my server... I used ESET since version 2 ( which I have a copy of..LOL hated 4 I think it was )..

I replaced my computer, then went through three Windows 8.1 Installations before I ever got to start actually putting my stuff back together ( HATE OEM OS installations ).. finally got the kinks worked out.. THEN.. Windows 10 was released.. This whole time the only thing protecting me has been Windows Defender and Firewall...LOL :P The last time I ran it was on Windows 7...

Now that I go commando.. ( and it could even get better..LOL ) I may never go back... Thought I would wait for ESET 9 to try it again.. but I will say if you have ESET configured wrong it will slow you down.. and be annoying as hell.. I hate sitting it up fresh.. Was one of the scares I had about using ESET for a business computer with multiple users who did not have experience.. but love it nonetheless..

The last report shows it to be almost seventh or eighth on the list or something.. still hitting 98% while others scoring higher were getting 100% but 100% of what.. false positives?.. curious..

The two reports I have seen are yet to have shown testing on Windows 10.. that I have been wondering about as well.. ( and how much system speed I am going to sacrifice when I do install )...

Hello !?! We are in Sept.2015 and I recommend you to try KIS2016 and you will realise that Kaspersky 2016 is even faster and lighter than ESET - that resulted also in AV-Test and AV-Comparatives latest tests (and they tested v.2015 - v.2016 is better...) .

Dear Sir,

I have tried both the internet security suites KIS 2016 v16.0.0.614 and the latest beta v2016.0.1.170 on Win 10 x64.

Its a little lighter compered to v2015 , but still is super heavy.

compered to Esset and 360 TS is very very far.

The start up process is a mess ( this problem is since 2013 ) and they are not able to fix this once and for all.

the Kaspersky clients are moving from it because of this problems, especia;;y the ones with older devices.

EUGENE KASPERSKY was asked in 2014 in Israel this question, and he himself admitted all this stuff

You will realize how much heavier KIS is when you Will play and test other AV like Esset, Avira, Comodo or 360 TS.

After looking at this AV, you will say '' how stupid I was, my computer was suffering and I didn't realize''

Ciao and eat well as an Italian
