Update: Microsoft starts to fix Start Menu in new Windows 10 preview

Microsoft has rolled out Build 10547 of Windows 10 to its "Insider" public preview testers, offering a fix to the Start menu bug that saw some shortcuts missing.

Windows Insider builds are not intended for production use, but represent the first phase in deploying updates across the various editions of Windows 10.

The most significant change is a fix for the surprising Start menu bug where users with large numbers of applications installed find some shortcuts missing. In these cases, searching Start also fails. The cut-off point seems to be 512 shortcuts.

Announcing the new build, Windows veep Gabe Aul says:

This misses the point. Windows 10 users (not just Insiders) do not want more tiles, rather they want Start to work as advertised. Microsoft's Arun Singh, posting to a long thread on this issue on Microsoft's support forum, simply says:

And for the Insiders that want more than 512 tiles on Start; we now support up to 2,048.

It is still curious though, first that Microsoft could release Windows 10 with a major bug in this critical and sensitive feature, and second that even the fixed version apparently still has a limit.

A fix to this issue is now available in the latest insider build 10547

Few users are likely to have more than 2,048 shortcuts, but it still seems too close for comfort for the application launch mechanism in a modern operating system.

According to software developer and reverse engineer Rafael Rivera the problem is a column in an internal Windows database, called TilesInView, which has space usage limited to 8192 bytes. In the update, a column called TilesInViewEx has appeared, with space usage of 65536 bytes, suggesting he is on the right track, though it does not quite add up, and exactly how this stuff works has not been revealed.

Aul adds that "search should work more consistently now when interacting with Start" so there is hope that it will now work correctly for most users. There is also a new option to have four columns of tiles, up from three.

The Start menu issues may have come about because of Microsoft's frequent changes of mind about how it should work. Windows 8 introduced a full-screen Start menu that many users disliked, though it worked well for users who adjusted to it.

Early Windows 10 previews had another version, which has now appeared for Windows RT, but was dropped for mainstream Windows 10 in favour of a third implementation built with XAML. This makes it easy for Microsoft to share code with Windows 10 Mobile.

Another feature in this build is ORTC (Object Real Time Communications) API support in the Edge browser. This supports protocols defined by the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) RTCWEB working group and will enable Skype and other RTC applications to run without plug-ins.

Aul adds that there are significant improvements in apps including Photos and Xbox.

it doesn't matter whether it's right, sane or healthy to have that many start menu items. the operating system's job is to MANAGE whatever the computer has installed and the start menu's job is to display it.

the ONLY limit should be hardware capabilities. if your computer can handle it, the OS has no say on it.

Has anyone figured out why the start menu is so extremely slow even on the newest 10547 preview? Everytime I hit the flag (start menu) on the left at the bottom, it takes almost 5 seconds before it comes up. I counted. This is ridiculous. I changed the menushowdelay in the registry and that didn't do anything. If anyone has any answers of how to speed it up, let me know. Thank you.

The latest Insider preview is the worst since I joined the program. Mishitsoft has introduced so many bugs that is unveliebable to make a count of them. Black screen in login screen, it doesn't show the OS's menu in startup, windows feedback forgets that is logged in, interference of mouse in some games when played with controller, appications that are erroneusly recognized as games, etc.

Yeah, and the start menu and the notifications menu(??) are awfully slow. This build must be fixed ASAP.

We insiders are guinea pigs, but this is ridiculous.

Once its fixed the Start Menu (which i might point out wasnt broken until they removed it in Windows 8 :) ), maybe then Microsoft will fix you know, the entire rest of the POS that is Windows 10...

Ive seen so many users with the Windows 10 disppearing Start Men....run the manifest/xml fix - it still doesnt work trick, only to have them beg me to revert them to good old Windows 7

Of course ive obliged, i hate to see end users suffer...

Funny, people calling it Microshit, or M$shit, or whatever, but are still installing or anxious to get the updates...

People seem to understand Windows is a system to make money for a company that develops software for people who lack the skills or the time to learn how to use Linux, or also that for some reason couldn't get a hand in a good hardware that would work well with Linux, which is my case.

Windows is for PCs what IOS is for phones, cute, sort of powerful, but not the end system for security or customization, Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 are the proof of it, Windows users have been begging Microsoft for better ways to configure the system and customize it their own way, Windows Insider Program is a step forward in regards to this, but is and will most likely be for years miles away in comparison to what u can do in Linux.

Maybe in a few months or years Windows Insider Program will work better, or maybe after they finish cleaning up the thousands of small bugs they left unattended, this will speed up a little bit.

So yeah, there are bugs, and no, this isn't really a new system, this is in fact a Windows 8 improved and also this Windows launch was in my opinion the worst launch Microsoft has EVER done in regards to system stability/quality, even Vista was more stable.

But again, they just want to make something cute so that people will leave Windows 7 and XP for the new fun and easier things u can do using Windows 10.

I never used windows 8 for no longer than to just update it to 8.1 . i never had issues with 8.1 like i did with windows 7 before it got it SP1 . The whole deal with vista was when it came out most apps and pcs would not run good with it but by the time windows 7 came out most all apps worked for it and if you was trying to run Vista on a XP box that was just the user being stupid . .

But I agree they say that every new O/S is crap, Even windows 98 se users said this about XP... they always have when all O/S had bugs some even for years before they were fixed .. they sit around on there legacy O/S made by the very same company that it took years to achieve to be as stable as it is . If they hate windows they should be running Linux or mac . But they don't they just complain about something they never tired and I dont count using it in a VM trying it really .

The reason why some end users of windows 10 are complaining about bugs is because it was gave to them free so most installed years before they would have normally. There's a deadline you know!

I been on the net since 2001 and this is the 1st time I used a O/S with so few updates out yet expect for Windows Me maybe and you really cant count it because it never got any improvement at all . If win10 was not free I would have waited a while and used 8.1 .

Errrmmm...

If you want to have a great OS, you deal with the problems that come with its development. I'm a software developer, so I work with different platforms (win/mac/linux/android/ios). I can complain about the previews because I test them in order to improve them. It's not skills or time.

And to think that win 10 is cuter than 7, 8-8.1 is a biiiiiig mistake... it's awfull (specially the desktop icons...)

Peace!
