BTW: DDR2 is cheap now!

You got that right! It's really cheap now, I'm thinking about going for 4 GB too, atm I've got 2 GB.

I have a question on ram...

I now have 2x 1GB (Geil Black Dragon) and want to upgrade to 4GB.

1. Option: Buy an identical pair (2x1GB)

2. Option: Buy same ram, but 2x2GB (and use only 4GB)

3. Option: Buy 2x2GB and use all (2x1GB and 2x2GB = 6GB)

A pair of 2x1GB = 50€

A pair of 2x2GB = 80€

You didn't specify how many slots you are having and according to me better option is 2x2GB that is option 2.

A pair of 2x2GB, cheaper than 2 pair of 2x1GB. :(

You already have a pair of 2x1GB, depend on your OS (32 or 64 bit i don't know) you should chose:

If there is 32bit system, so maximum RAM supported is 4GB, you can chose option 1 if still using old pair, or option 2 with 30€ plus, if you can, i think it's much better.

If you have a 64 bit system, and your mainboard support FLEX memory technology

Gives users a more flexible memory upgrade option by allowing different memory sizes to be installed while maintaining dual-channel mode/performance.

then option 3 sound good :(

BlackLine I'd go for 2 x 1 GB and use 4 GB, 4 modules of 1 GB are always faster than 2 modules of 2 GB. Couldn't imagine anyone needing 6 GB of RAM...

4 modules of 1 GB are always faster than 2 modules of 2 GB.

Can you explain more, i think better choice is 2GBx2

I'm not sure if this is the correct logic, but I was told that more modules making the same amount are always faster. Logic: When you have 2 modules(2GB) of 800 MHz you would have 1600 MHz, when you have 4 modules(1GB) of 800 MHz you have 3200 MHz. The numbers are incorrect for sure, but I can somewhat understand why more modules would be faster.

what do you mean anyone needing more than 6gigs I'm a porformance nut who needs the latest tech and software. if have the option to use x64 load it with 8 if you have x32 then 4 6 gig in 32 bit is well a failure cause you can only use a max of 4 gig in x32

FYI: He's using Vista x64 :)

Could you please type a bit more, readable? Thanks, I'm seriously having an hard time reading it.

If you have 4 or 6 GB RAM in x32 it will only use approximately 3,5 GB.

What I mean with not needing more than 6 GB is that none standard computer users actually need 6 GB of RAM.
