Microsoft built its own Linux operating system

You probably only heard about one of the new operating systems Microsoft released recently: Windows 10. The company actually has another new OS that it’s excited about, though, and it’s Linux-based.

Yes, really. Microsoft has indeed released a Linux-based operating system. Don’t get too excited about trying it out, though. This isn’t some kind of attempt by Microsoft to steal desktop Linux share from the likes of Ubuntu, Mint, and Fedora. It’s not an OS that’s built for computers. It’s “a cross-platform modular operating system for data center networking,” and it’s made to run in Microsoft’s Azure cloud environment. Fittingly enough, it’s called Azure Cloud Switch.

Microsoft actually has a very interesting relationship with the Linux community, and it’s not the antagonistic one it’s sometimes (or often) made out to be. The company has actually been quite involved with Linux and open source in the recent past, and has made numerous code contributions over the years. Microsoft actually cracked the top 20 corporate contributors list by pushing 1% of the total code committed to the Linux kernel over a three-year span.

So, why Linux? Why not try to use one of its many specialized Windows operating systems to build the Azure Cloud Switch? Likely because Linux was seen as the best choice for this particular task.

Microsoft is a whole lot more platform-agnostic today than it ever was. It has released dozens of apps for Android and iOS — sometimes without ever releasing them for their own mobile OS. Satya Nadella has placed a huge emphasis on the cloud and services as the way forward, and if that means cozying up to Linux from time to time, well, clearly that’s not a problem.

They know a lot of people will not buy into the way Windows is going ,so they probably want to cover all their bases for the future .

Think what "Windows 20" will be like :)
