Windows 10 spying:

How to opt out of Microsoft's intrusive new terms of use

Parts of Microsoft's new privacy policy are raising eyebrows due to concerns that they could be 'spying' on what users do.

One excerpt worryingly tells users that "we will access, disclose and preserve personal data", including the contents of emails or files in private folders.
They add that they will do this when they need to comply with law enforcement, prevent spam, maintain the security of their networks, or protect their rights or property.

[my comment : And what about rights and property pf the users ? :coolwink:  ]

Microsoft also keeps tabs on your behaviour in order to target adverts to you - something you might be uncomfortable with, or might just find annoying.

If you're worried about your privacy then you might be put off by upgrading to Windows 10 - which is a shame, because early reviews all seem to agree that it's a really good operating system.

4chan users have also been quick to sum up privacy concerns with this image [click on the pic to enlarge] that has since appeared on reddit and social media sites :

Fortunately, it's possible to opt-out of these privacy policies, and Rock Paper Shotgun have explained how to do it.

Go to Settings - Privacy and turn off everything that looks dodgy

There are 13 screens you need to get through to cover every aspect of your machine, including what apps and programs have access to your location, contacts, messaging details and camera, amongst other things.

Turn off Cortana

Again, this could be a problem, as the Cortana search function, which is similar to Apple's Siri, has been highly praised as one of the best functions of Windows 10.

However, one of the reasons it works so well is because it logs your past searches and can provide suggestions and more personalised search results.

Users will have to decide whether they're willing to disable Cortana in exchange for increasing privacy.

Turn off personalised ads

Obviously, ads that are tailored to what you want depend on storing some of your data, otherwise you'd be bombarded with adverts for things you have no intention of buying.

Windows 10 ads work by delivering you targeted adverts wherever you're logged in to your Microsoft account, whether you're on desktop, mobile or tablet.

It's clear that Microsoft doesn't want users to do this, because it's not as easy to disable as the other privacy features.

However, it's still pretty straightforward. You need to go to an external website, and simply turn both personalised ad options to 'off'.

Use a local Windows account

This is a fairly drastic option, because it would severely cut back on the synchronisation of features between your devices.

Instead of using an existing Windows account, you could use a newly made local account instead - this prevents Microsoft from getting your data, and using it to make sure your machine is updated when you log on with a Windows account.

This is a useful feature, but if you're concerned about the data harvesting that it involves, it just takes a simple step to avoid it.

Some people may prefer the convenience of synced features and targeted ads, and that's fine - but it doesn't justify the privacy policy being quite intrusive, and you're opted in automatically.

I keep seeing people posting this type of information, but I was one of the first users of gmail, so I have used it for many years, and I have never received an ad from google in my account.

Same here. Never got a single Ad from google in my Inbox. Rather, their spam filtering is one of the best IMO.

Agree. Great spam filter was one of the two main reasons I chose Gmail many years ago.

PS. I see no ads too, but am not quite sure how it was some years ago.

Its always the same, since the begining of gmail. You may have some text based Ads while serching the mailbox (above the search result window, based on search keywords). And, this is how google makes its revenue. The ad.offers are so minimal that, one may not even notice that.

i was a gmail user too from early on...still am ...but after one of their updates i was getting ads for a very short time so i opted out of them but was still getting them so had to use ad blockers for this...still like gmail despite what others say i love the fact that it auto updates/syncs across platforms and devices among other features it has

Lol and you say you worry about privacy Ive not used gmail , hotmail or yahoo since like 2011. and I'm just fine without it. And you worry about what windows 10 can do?

Microsoft, Facebook, Google and Yahoo release US surveillance requests

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/feb/03/microsoft-facebook-google-yahoo-fisa-surveillance-requests

Google use to keep a transparency report about what government ask them to do but the government made them stop posting it back over a year ago.

http://www.google.com/transparencyreport/removals/government/

I'm not prejudice I hate all types of data harvesting and I use none of these services . :P

I wanted to see if there were different articles about windows ten to this one is funny (I know its not really funny):

I wanted to see if independent.co.uk is reliable and it is. I was researching politics reading information about obama possibly running for a third term (we need a new president) anyway I said to myself is it possible for a president to run for a third term I thought the limit was two terms and when I went to google and searched for can a president it autocompleted to can a president run for a third term first option I said how the hell did you know I was going to search for that lawls (could that be autocomplete just doing its job or are the telemetry points in windows seven being used to there advantage thats just it I dont know). We may not know for sure I dont think Im going to use windows ten as my main operating system yet I want to find out if we got ourselves a real life red queen (highly advanced and self-aware umbrella computer from resident evil movies).
