Windows 10 comes with the telemetry feature enabled by default which collects all sorts of user activity and sends it to Microsoft. Many users worry about this behavior and are constantly looking for ways to disable it completely. If you are concerned about privacy, you should know that in Windows 10 build 10525, telemetry and data collection services are locked down to send all information to Microsoft!

There are three states of Telemetry are available in Windows 10

  1. Basic
Basic information is data that is vital to the operation of Windows. This data helps keep Windows and apps running properly by letting Microsoft know the capabilities of your device, what is installed, and whether Windows is operating correctly. This option also turns on basic error reporting back to Microsoft. If you select this option, Microsoft will be able to provide updates to Windows (through Windows Update, including protection by the Malicious Software Removal Tool), but some apps and features may not work correctly or at all.
  2. Enhanced
Enhanced data includes all Basic data plus data about how you use Windows, such as how frequently or how long you use certain features or apps and which apps you use most often. This option also lets Microsoft collect enhanced diagnostic information, such as the memory state of your device when a system or app crash occurs, as well as measure reliability of devices, the operating system, and apps.
  3. Full
Full data includes all Basic and Enhanced data, and also turns on advanced diagnostic features that collect additional data from your device, such as system files or memory snapshots, which may unintentionally include parts of a document you were working on when a problem occurred. This information helps Microsoft further troubleshoot and fix problems. If an error report contains personal data, Microsoft claims they won't use that information to identify, contact, or target advertising to you. This is the recommended option which they recommend for the best Windows experience and the most effective troubleshooting.

In Windows 10 build 10525, the option is set to Full and cannot be changed by the user!

So Microsoft will know all about the apps you are using and even about the personal data you have. If you are not happy with such behavior, consider staying with the current RTM build 10240 which is locked to "basic" data collection level and can even be disabled.

Only way you would know if host blocking fully worked would be use wire shark and make sure . You can block the exe's with with a firewall if its a good one and it will really be blocked .

I really dont have much faith in host blocks, after I seen it not working for certain apps . ;)

. Hosts file and DNS manipulation
While simple to implement, these methods are also very easy to circumvent. One method to circumvent this form of ad filtering is to load ads from servers with hard coded IP addresses, thus skipping name resolution altogether. Another method to evade this form of filtering is to load the advertisements from a server which also serves the main content; blocking name resolution of this server would also block the useful content of the site.

People tried block ads and crap with host and they get around it easy also programs like IDM they get around this easy . As much money as M$ has they could too. IDM let us get away with host leaking thorough for along time before they stopped it from all the way working . Something like Windows you would never know unless you used a ip sniffer to make sure .

Already changed it to basic when I first installed Windows 10 weeks back, don't really see the necessity to try and outright block it personally until they do something sinister with said information. Otherwise I'v been fine with basic.

This is for preview version not the stable version . Stable version is locked to basic . Still I block a few things it calls out . The people who done this article make tweaks. They told us how to disable telemetry way before any of these programs to do it came out.

I did a clean install of Build 10525 few hours ago, and the setting is enabled in full by default and can't be modified, this is normal in Windows 10 "Insider Preview" Builds, since long time ago.

I hope you understand now.

I think that those who want to ”upgrade” from RTM build 10240 to 10525 Insider Preview, they should be concerned about activation first, then about privacy.

if you upgrade from a genuine windows 10 you will remain activated .Its people that try to do it on pc that was never upgraded to windows 10 to begin with.

If you want use preview for win 7 or win 8.1 you must upgrade to the stable version of win 10 then you're key is wired to you're hd and you're good to go to install preview.

The free O & O ShutUp10 utility may be able to change this?

Anyway, the Windows Insider releases are for testing purposes, so those users shouldn't be surprised about the amount of feedback data going back to M$. If the public version was like this, that'd be a(nother) cause to worry about deploying W10 in a production environment.

It must be set "Full" in order to provide feedback using the app. In earlier releases, you could opt-out of Insider program to change the setting. Not sure about 10525. That ShutUp10 probably helps if you are concerned, but you will not be able to send feedback.

Well, isn't it obvious, the 'feedback" is the main purpose of "Insider Preview" builds, because, the company wants wider back of the developing product for finalization at the earliest. If it's not the case, why would they release it to "some" people for testing, they could easily do it in house, but then, it would take more time to find bugs, and making it final. It's crazy, you want to install test builds, yet you don't want to give feedback. Better, you stay with final releases "only' with your customization.
