212eta
Somewhere deep in the cobweb-filled recesses of your brain, you might remember a time when checking your email meant booting up Internet Explorer. But as this infographic shows, it wasn’t long ago that the world was filled with Internet Explorers. Then, a couple years back, nearly every country switched to Chrome. The visualization below, which colors countries based on the most popular desktop and tablet internet browser of the year, was created by Jody Sieradzki using data from the web tracker Stat Counter. The widespread switch from Internet Explorer to Chrome is fascinating to watch, but so are some of the other regional patterns: Opera, for instance, had a brief moment of glory in Russia and former USSR countries six years back, while Firefox swept across Asia and Africa in 2011 and 2012 before getting dethroned by Chrome. In 2014, the two people living in Greenland decided to give Safari a go.It was a short-lived experiment.Watch the World Switch from Internet Explorer to Chrome (gizmodo)
GRiM
I switched from IE to Firefox about 12 years ago. Never gone back.I have tried Chrome multiple times but just kept running into problems with lack of addons I use/features etc so went back to FF each time. I quite like Google's software/services but just can't get on with Chrome, just too limited.

It's not perfect by any strech of the imagination., but separate threads for each tab means it's easy to sandbox each and every tab /thread independantly , keeping them effectively isolated from each other. A break down in one doesn't comtaminate the others or necessarily the underlying infrastructure. Chrome becomes an execution engine with controlled data flow at defined poiunts in and out of each sandbox.. It may be "wasteful" but with the advent of todays powerful PC's , it is the best way forward. .Atleast that's how I see it. Now back to FF :-) Tons of useful plugins, but ........ SB7
I hear ya, .. why do we need more powerful PC's..That's 2003 hardware , why not run 2003 software ? Win89SE, IE4, Fprot AVDo we complain about the gaming industry ? Every new game needs better hardware , why ? because the games are getting better AI's better graphics, , game play etc ( in a generic sense, there are , of course stilll really crappy games too)I still play demonstar, :-) so I'm more into MAME than anything else. MAME of course needs some horse power behind it...Viruses/malware can far more complex and harder to detect so they need more sandboxing in a time accelerated VM before they are relased to the system etc..Grahpics programs, ( Photoshop etc) need tons of ram and better hardware to do more etc)Having new hardware is the price of "progress". IF people want a more feature rich environment then they will have to upgrade their hardware.Having said that, I still have a 9 year old laptop that quad boots Ubuntu ,Win7x86, Win7x64, WIn10 x64. ( it also runs a Yosemite VM and let's not forget XPMode when needed) I spent 19$ on T9500 cpu , $26 to up the ram to 4gig and installed a 500G SSD I recovered from my main desktop when I put larger one in . Not a lot of money for significantly different performance. I really don't notice the difference between Chrome and FF other than Chrome seems to launch faster.I suspect that people "may" feel Chrome is faster because their FF is loaded with plugins etc that need to be loaded at startup.IN my multinational company, FF is actively blocked onthe network ( Try to install it and you'll get a visist ... from me :-( ) Only Chrome and IE are allowed ... "For security reasons" .. however it has more to do with the fact that IE/Chrome allow us parse/scan ( re: spy on) all SSL traffic ( certificate substituion) than any performance criteria. I suspect we are not alone in this and given how every week we hear about another gapping hole in IE it's not surprising how quickly chrome has spread across the globe. People know Goggle ( or they think they know google) and thus trust Chrome . FireFox is an unkonwn for most and they are too lazy to think more than a couple of seconds about what they are installing and what it is doing in the background.. It's too easy to be lazy
