I root my Nexus with Wugfresh Nexus Root Toolkit. Nexus devices don't come with manufacturer/carrier bloatware and I like the plain Android interface, so I don't run custom roms. I mainly did it to run adfree, a simple adblocker that blocks most ads everywhere, even in apps. Over the years I've found some other useful root apps, like App Opps, which allows you to set permissions for individual apps instead of just accepting then carte blanche when you install them.
