9 reasons not to upgrade to Windows 10 -- yet

Windows 10 is just about here -- and many users (especially those who have been wrestling with Windows 8 are probably eager to upgrade. But even if you can get it now -- the upgrade will be sent first to those who signed up for the Windows Insider beta program and then in "slow waves" to everyone else -- you may want to hold off.

Here are nine reasons you might want to put off a Windows 10 upgrade.

1. Your system can't run it
This may seem obvious, but sometimes it's the obvious that gets missed. In order to run Windows 10, you need a PC or tablet with a 1GHz processor or faster, 1GB of RAM for 32-bit PCs or 2GB for 64-bit PCs, 16GB hard disk space for 32-bit PCs or 20GB hard disk space for 64-bit PCs, a DirectX 9 or later graphics card with a WDDM 1.0 driver and an 800 x 600 display or better. For more details, go to Microsoft's Windows 10 specifications page.
If your system doesn't qualify, then you're going to have to upgrade your hardware before you upgrade your operating system. (Or just buy a new computer with Windows 10 already installed.)

2. You get a year for the free upgrade offer
Windows 7 and Windows 8 users get a free upgrade to Windows 10. But you don't have to upgrade right away -- you have a full year. (The clock starts on July 29, 2015.) So you can upgrade at your leisure and not waste a bright, summer day doing it.

3. You're using Windows 7
Windows 10 undoes the damage done by Windows 8, an operating system that was built more for touch devices than for traditional PCs. In fact, two of Windows 10's big improvements over Windows 8 are the addition of a Windows 7-style Start menu and the ability to work entirely on the desktop and ignore the touch-focused Start screen.
So if you currently use Windows 7, you're already set -- you have a Start menu and you work only on the desktop. In short: If you're happy with the way Windows 7 works, you may want to stay with it.

4. You like Windows 7 desktop gadgets
Windows 7 includes desktop gadgets that do things such as check the weather and stock quotes, monitor your CPU, report about the state of your system, let you listen to streaming radio stations, and check your hard drive speed and the state of your network. They don't work on Windows 10 and will be deleted when you upgrade. So if you're a gadget fan, don't upgrade.

5. Security updates for Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 will be available for years
Microsoft has a habit of pushing people to its latest operating system by ending support for its old operating systems, halting security updates and leaving users potentially open to security threats. If you have Windows 7 or Windows 8, you've got years before that happens. Microsoft will keep issuing security patches for Windows 7 until January 2020 and for Windows 8 until January 2023. Even Windows Vista will get security updates until April 2017. So no need to rush.

6. You use OneDrive placeholders
In Windows 8.1, OneDrive placeholders, also called smart files, let you see all of the files in OneDrive, even if the files are located in the cloud and not on your device. When you double-click a placeholder on your PC, the file is downloaded. However, when Windows 10 ships, OneDrive placeholders won't work because of the upgraded OneDrive software.
Microsoft says it will try to bring OneDrive placeholder functionality to Windows 10 by year's end. But if OneDrive placeholders are important to you, don't upgrade until they work with Windows 10.

7. You have old peripherals
The Achilles heel of most new operating systems is handling older peripherals, such as printers and scanners. Microsoft doesn't always make sure that drivers for vintage devices work with the new operating system -- it would take too many development resources. As a result, some of these peripherals won't work with newer operating systems.
So if you have old favorites with a lot of mileage on them, don't upgrade right away. Scour the Internet for news of whether they work with Windows 10, and only upgrade to it when you know that they do.

8. You love Windows Media Center
Yes, it's true -- there are some people who are big fans of Window Media Center, which was released way back in 2002 and which is used to play video, music and other media. Microsoft has been trying to kill it off for years, and even disbanded the team responsible for it back in 2009.
The truth is, Media Center was always a nightmare to set up and has been superseded by streaming media services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Spotify, Apple Music and many others. Still, there are die-hards out there who love it -- and who will be dismayed to learn that Windows Media Center won't work with Windows 10. If you're one of that group, stay away from upgrading.

9. You don't need the pain of early adoption
No matter how widespread beta testing is for a new operating system, it can't uncover all the bugs and gotchas. A new operating system hasn't been tested on every possible piece of hardware, with every piece of software, and with every hardware/software combination. People who upgrade immediately are the guinea pigs. They're the ones who feel the pain.
If you'd prefer to go with an operating system that's had enough time for a shakedown cruise, wait another six months before you upgrade.

I'm legit user of windows 8.1 i will wait off tell at lest installers and stuff are all updated for it but people who use windows 7 it may be a little harder to get use too . People didn't even want to upgrade to windows 8.1 because of they removed the start menu witch could added bk by installing freeware . this may have a start menu but its going take some getting use too and there saying that Windows 10 is going be the last windows that its just keep updating to new features. The 1st build will be about as green as you're going get . So if you plain to keep using windows one day you most likely will end up upgrading to windows 10 anyways so there's no rush ..at lest for me there's not I dont have to worry with cracking it . I will have it legit. :)

Worthy of a quick read, I think:

"Here's what Windows 10 won't change: Windows 8's plans to tie you to Microsoft services"

Excerpt=>

Windows 10’s alluring blend of bribery and compromise will surely win back disillusioned Windows 8 users once the operating system hits PCs on July 29.

On the surface, Windows 10 is nothing short of a major walking-back of Windows 8’s most irritating aspects and a full-on love letter to traditional PC enthusiasts, replete with new keyboard shortcuts, virtual desktop support, paste functionality via keyboard shortcuts in the Command Prompt (finally!), and—oh yes—the return of the beloved Start menu. It's been a daily joy to use the Windows 10 Preview builds, and the near-final build 10240 shows much to look forward to.

Don’t let that fresh new coat of paint fool you, though. Windows 10 may mask the nasty symptoms that made users shrink away from Windows 8, but it doesn't cure the underlying causes. Windows 10 still advances most of Windows 8’s core missions—and those core missions are what made Windows 8 so controversial to many defenders of the traditional desktop.

It’s what’s inside that counts

Ive not used a green O/S for my main computer since 2001 when XP 1st came out and was recovering from using ME . The only reason I switched to 8.1 was i bought a computer with windows 8. I will get on the windows 10 train before my year is up I guess . Or I could keep using what I have by the time updates run out I will need buy a new one by then anyways .

Just because your computers weren't strong enough to support Windows vista doesn't mean that it was shit. Microsoft made a big jump from XP to Vista, hardware drivers weren't ready and people wanted to run Vista just like XP with their shit CPU and 1 GB RAM. my PC had 4 GB ram and a quad core CPU with updated drivers and believe it or not it was the best and most beautiful OS ever.

I used win vista about a week before upgrading to windows 7 . I bought 2 computers with Vista all ready on them they sent me the free windows 7 upgrade disk . I still have one of them that's never hardly been used at all with widows 7 sp1 its in mint state.

I saying by the time everyone upgraded to 4 core computers and stuff Win 7 SP 1 was fixing to come out and if you bought a computer new with Vista it was a free upgrade windows7.. win vista never had a chance .When Widows 7 became the number one O/S over XP it was 2011 when SP1 came out .

It was almost 2012 before XP lost its top spot it had for 10 years almost 11 .

When Vista was released in 2007 Microsoft faced people's complains about driver incompatibility and hardware requirements so they had no choice but releasing another OS out of their ordinary release date so about 2 years later Windows 7 came out and it was more than great. drivers was a huge problem for Vista and everyone was working on making a Vista-compatible driver for their hardware, that's why most old peripherals has Vista-ready drivers and they can be used in 7, 8.1 and 10 with no problem. it's in the nature of Windows to keep getting better and better forever.

I was not dumb enough to try to upgrade a XP box to Win Vista . I still have a XP box in there collecting dust maybe one day I'll put Linux on it but i sure never would put vista on it .

I'm in winter here so can I do the upgrade?

I'm not stupid and I'll be upgrading to it the moment it's out on all my systems. Had no issues upgrading to 8 and 10 is just an extension of 8.

You make out like it's an entirely new OS that's undergone zero testing. That's not how it works. I ain't waiting any longer for this glorious OS.

You got to love all the Microsoft fanboys who never buy windows but they talk about how great it is . In a prefect world bugs would not exist . But the world is not prefect . always if you test a lot stuff like me you run into numbers of stuff that want work when Microsoft releases a new O/S . Even when SP3 came out on XP stuff that worked in SP1 and 2 stop working, many cracks and stuff had to be made all over again. and was just sp update.

Just tried Win10, went back to my good(old?) Win7 again with Acronis backup.

Encountered lots of problems; printer did not work anymore, very loooong start up-time, did not like the way folders opened( every time had to chance this to" small icons" ,very annoying!)

This new browser,Edge, difficult to configure, and so on !

btw; start up-time very dissapointing !

So,had reasons enough to get back to my roots,Win7 !

Will start this project later again, after correcting a lot of things by MS.............
