Build 10240 now available for Windows Insiders in Fast and Slow rings

Hi everyone, today we are releasing a new build to both the Fast and Slow rings. We’re just about two weeks away from beginning to offer Windows 10 to the world, as Terry detailed here. Over the past few days we’ve been preparing our release pipelines and processes, and this build is one step closer to what customers will start to receive on 7/29. For example, you’ll notice with this build that the desktop watermark is no longer there (you can still do Search > Winver to see your version number.

On Monday we announced that builds from here on will only be available through Windows Update, so to get this one you can either wait and it will be installed automatically (but who are we kidding, I know you want it now!) or go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates. Remember that you’ll need to be logged in with your Microsoft Account in order to receive the build.

Besides builds, over the next 2 weeks you’ll also see some Windows Updates and app updates in the Store, so make sure to keep checking for updates daily to make sure you’re running the latest and greatest code.

Microsoft Edge is blazing fast!

The Edge team has been continuing to optimize performance since first adding the new browser to Windows 10. In this build, Microsoft Edge is even better and is beating Chrome and Safari on their own JavaScript benchmarks:

  • On WebKit Sunspider, Edge is 112% faster than Chrome
  • On Google Octane, Edge is 11% faster than Chrome
  • On Apple JetStream, Edge is 37% faster than Chrome

We’re really pleased with those performance gains and we hope that you’ll enjoy faster browsing with Microsoft Edge along with the many great features we’ve added over the last several builds.

Windows 10 App Development

Developers working on Windows 10 will have the first opportunity to upload Universal Windows Applications to the Windows Dev Center using production quality Windows 10 tools on July 29th. We appreciate all the time you’ve spent using flights of the tools and providing feedback and we are excited for you to begin sharing your applications with everyone running Windows 10. For more information on developing Universal Windows Apps, see the Building Apps For Windows blog.

Office on Windows 10

Thanks to all of you who have been using the new Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint mobile apps on Windows 10. There are a few changes to the apps coming up that are part of helping them get ready for their release with Windows 10. You may have already noticed that on PCs and tablets we’ve added “Mobile” to the app names (to help distinguish them from the Office desktop suite), while on phones we simply call the apps Word, Excel and PowerPoint. We will also remove “Preview” from the app names and in about one week, you will need an Office 365 subscription to edit on Windows 10 PCs and larger tablets.

Similar to what we announced in March, viewing and most editing will remain free for non-commercial use on devices of 10.1” or less. Otherwise, you will need a qualifying Office 365 subscription. If you don’t have an Office 365 subscription, you can sign up for a free trial at www.office.com/try. You can also always edit your documents for free in Office Online at www.office.com. The full featured OneNote Universal App will come installed with Windows 10 and similar to OneNote on all other devices, editing is free.

We’re getting close!

We’re all working super hard here to deliver the best Windows ever, and are preparing everything that needs to be in place for our public release. We cannot wait for all of you, and your friends and family who reserved their upgrade, to see the result.

This is going to be an exciting couple of weeks, but it is also only the beginning. Windows as a service means that we’ll continue to keep Windows up to date with improvements and features, and our Windows Insider Program will continue so you can get early builds and share your feedback with us.

Stay tuned for more news about our launch activities, and at least one fun surprise for Windows Insiders coming up!

Thanks,
g

Download finished, this looks like it's RTM lol

Running "slmgr /dlv" I get information that states it's a "Retail" copy fully licensed, also the key currently shown is no longer the key i used to install the preview, which could mean that we are actually getting a key as a prize.

If u check "slmgr /dlv" there is no evaluation copy/expiration date anymore.

If it is preactivated it definitely is not RTM. It is still some kind of Insider build that sends Microsoft reports and data from your Windows. the same crap as before

Not necessarily. Remember, Insiders get Windows for free once released. If his email account is registered via insider program he will be automatcally licensed as full via RTM.

If you do a clean install and not activated you can use KMSPico and key W269N-WFGWX-YVC9B-4J6C9-T83GX

This is supposed to be Pro key: VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T

Not confirmed either as not installed yet.

So if we clean install this version and log in with Microsoft account that once used with Windows insider, we will participate in the insider program? if so how can we change that? I think Microsoft collected enough data and now time for the final version.

It isn't RTM for sure, after the huge patch i found another bug in the log in screen(log screen would show the password area ONLY, with the wallpaper in the background) + after installing the huge patch and about 2 or 3 times I had reboot, when logging in i ended up in temp account.

Besides the fact that Wzor.net says it's Escrow and I have never seen them to be mistaken.

Regarding the activation process, I not 100% sure, but I have read around that they may have more ways of activation now, based on e-mail account, hardware id(OEM i think) and also key.

So they may have linked the hardware ID or the e-mail account to a Retail Pro.

But so far everything is just thoughts, let's see what we get in the next 10 days, if they really intend to release it on 7/29, we probably will get at least one more version as Escrow.

Insiders get Windows 10 but do you Really want to be Insider forever? you don't want to be like every body else have a final version of Win10 with nothing sent to Microsoft? the way i see it, on July 9 the ISO files which will get leaked will be Insiders unless they post MSDN version of Win10 and then you're sure it is the Original Win10 and you can either buy a license key or activate it with KMS activators.

"log screen would show the password area ONLY" Wow that's too big to be called a bug. it didn't have that problem in the previous builds, weird. hardware ID is only for laptops and Windows mobiles, right?

I hope in 7/29 or few days later we get a MSDN or full retail version of Win10 rather than an Insider final version. becasue Microsoft said they won't stop Insider program even after final release.

I already have a Win8.1 laptop so could just upgrade for free either from that or via Win7 activated with Loader by Daz as have Win10 reserved via that also. I'm also registered as insider so could get it through that.

I upgrade direct from Win8.1Pro to Build 10162 via Microsoft direct (ISO),

set to fast rings mode already

still unable to receive 10240 yet

may be I am lucky enough to find an ISO later.

BTW, my office 2013 need reactivate again, so troublesome :P

update: 18 July 2015

12 hours ago, direct upgrade to 10240 via Windows update, work like a charm & sexy ^.^

BTW, as usual, november_ra1n helped me to re-activate my stupid office 15 again :)

All other softwares work except ESET Endpoint Antivirus v6.1.2227.0 functioning without HIPS :(""

There is a post around here about the need to have a string set to TH1 in the registry to be able to receive the 10240 try to check on that.

I hadn't seen that before either, it may also be related to a driver bug, can't tell for sure, but that error delayed my login in about 2~4min which was quite annoying.

In relation to Insider program the problem would be bigger if they keep pushing us stuff that would break other things, if they push WITH a warning a new feature I wouldn't really be worried about it, I never had any problem about being a alpha or beta tester anyway.

Windows insider is not so good, maybe the problems don't show up on ordinary use but when you dig deeper they'll finally show up. many of them are driver related though, also upgrading from Windows 8.1 to 10 breaks everything. maybe programs like Google chrome don't show anything weird but it does break things, so this is against what Microsoft once said about upgrading straight from Win 7 or 8.1 to 10. I hope we get ISO links for Windows 10 build 10240 OEM RTM rather than insider RTM. just like previous Windows versions. MSDN is good too

You can use .esd to create ISO files to order to Upgrade yourself.

You can either burn ISO file and Upgrade on boot menu or simply click setup exe on your desktop and chose upgrade then setup exe will directly take you boot menu and do all the work.
