Lizard Squad: 17-yr-old Julius Kivimaki received a suspended sentence

A teenage Lizard Squad member has avoided prison even though a Finnish court found him culpable for thousands of denial of service attacks and other cybercrime offences.

Julius "zeekill" Kivimaki, 17, received a two-year suspended prison sentence and was "ordered to fight against cybercrime", according to local paper Kaleva (in Finnish).

Lizard Squad is best known for launching Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live in the run-up to Christmas last year, before cynically launching a DDoS-for-hire service called LizardStresser days afterwards.

Kivimaki played a key part in these offences, not least by acting as a Lizard Squad spokesman in on-air interviews about the attack with Sky News.

The group's attack infrastructure was put together using the resources of thousands of hacked home internet routers.

Finnish cops arrested Kivimaki in late 2014 before he was charged with a variety of offences, including data breaches, payment fraud and harassment. More coverage on the sentencing can be found on Daily Dot and Business Insider.
