Microsoft reveals how antivirus software will be handled

Since the free upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 could cause some apps to fail to work properly, Microsoft provides a more in-depth look at how the whole process is going to be performed when the new operating system becomes available on July 29.

And just like any other installed app, antivirus and antimalware software can be impacted by such compatibility issues, but Microsoft already has a plan to tackle this.

First of all, it’s worth mentioning that antivirus and antimalware software will be reinstalled during the free upgrade to Windows 10, but all settings will be saved on your computer.

Once the upgrade is complete, Windows 10 will automatically download the latest version of the security software that was running on your computer and apply the settings it previously saved, so you should be running Windows 10 with the latest version of the antivirus app, but with the exact same settings as before.

And yet, there’s something really important that needs to be taken into account. In order to get this special treatment, you need an active subscription or license for your security app, otherwise Windows 10 automatically disables it and turns on Windows Defender for real-time full protection.

Killing two birds with one stone

With this approach, Microsoft basically manages to solve two major issues not only for the company but also for its users.

Because of the security software installed on your computer, Windows 10 could fail to deploy properly and some files might not be copied to the hard disk, so by removing it from the PC, the company makes sure that the whole process goes smoothly.

And because it downloads and installs the latest version of the program, users are protected all the time with the latest tools provided in the software their paid for. If a subscription isn’t detected, they’re still protected 24/7 thanks to Windows Defender.

I believe it was associated with another post about the windows upgrade to 10 but one had to go to the source of that post and read the whole article and this info was in that article. That particular article said that if the antivirus was not up to date that the new Windows 10 installation would Uninstall that antivirus and default to the Windows Firewall and Windows Defender.

Sorry, my English is not at its peak.

I suppose what TheRuan is trying to express is that the news you posted is not new - maybe he finds it old as in stale, . . . . . . in other words rancid (pardon my English - it's getting retarded by the day.) :dunno:

That's what I meant, the news is old and was also previously posted here(nsane forum) along with another news regarding Windows 10 update process:

Windows 10 Upgrade Paths and Things to Know Before Upgrading

4. If you are using a 3rd party antivirus and anti-malware program and decide to upgrade to Windows 10, the setup will first check whether your antivirus and anti-malware subscription is current or not (i.e. whether your antivirus or anti-malware program license is valid or has expired). If the subscription is valid and current, Windows 10 setup will first uninstall the antivirus and anti-malware applications while taking a backup of your settings during upgrade. After upgrading, Windows will install the latest version available of your antivirus and anti-malware programs and will also restore your settings. But if your antivirus and anti-malware programs subscription is not current, Windows 10 upgrade will uninstall the security programs and will enable the built-in Windows Defender application.

There were a few other posts related to this, i guess people are a bit excited to get Windows 10 :)
