Security appliance sales surged 7.4 percent in the first quarter to $2.3 billion, shipments jumped 9.4 percent and Cisco continued to lead the pack, according to IDC data.

IDC reported that security appliance sales grew for the 22nd consecutive quarter.

On the global front, the U.S. represented 42.9 percent of revenue in the first quarter with 15.6 percent sales growth Western Europe saw revenue gain 9.8 percent in the first quarter and Latin America was up 4.8 percent. Asia Pacific saw revenue growth of 9.8 percent led by Huawei.

IDC argues that the increasing sophistication of cyberattacks is fueling demand for appliances that can secure disparate networks.
