Windows 10 Free Upgrade Offer

There's been a lot of talk about Windows 10 being a free upgrade. For many customers, that will be true for the first year. So let's confirm the details:

  • Microsoft will offer a free upgrade to Windows 10 for qualified Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.1 devices in the first year. After the first year, upgrades will be paid via boxed product and VL Upgrades.

  • Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 7 Home Basic and Home Premium devices upgrade to Windows 10 Home

  • Windows 8/8.1 Pro and Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate devices upgrade to Windows 10 Pro

  • If upgraded within the first 12 months following launch, the device will receive ongoing Windows 10 updates for free for the life of that device

  • Excludes Windows Enterprise and RT devices

  • The free Windows 10 upgrade is delivered through Windows Update; domain-joined machines can manually get the update via Windows Update. The upgrade cannot be deployed through WSUS.

Points 1 and 4 appear to be contradictory.

how i see them as meaning they pull the update from windows update after first year they both agree

From the fourth point; the device will receive ongoing Windows 10 updates for free for the life of that device

not contrdictory at all in means simply put during the first 12 months your be able to move to windows 10 those that do will get updates for the life of the device

if for whatever reason you decide to not download and install windows 10 before the 1 year time frame your have to buy an upgrade license "which would probably be like 99 usd or something"

I'm not sure if MS is incompetent at explaining or is actively trolling.

Why not just layout a be-all end-all document that spells out the process, with no weasel words.

No wonder the Enterprise doesn't want to plan or commit to a rollout. They due to MS have no damn conception of what the terms and gotchas will be.

All while people claim 10 is due by the summer.

What happens if when someone upgrades during the first year? Does he get a windows 10 product key?

What if someone upgrades and after the first year needs/wants to reinstall windows 10?
