A former top police officer has sensationally claimed that the robbers behind the Hatton Garden heist could have started a major underground fire that brought chaos to central London.

John O'Connor, the former head of the Met Police's Flying Squad, said the blaze that sparked a huge power cut in London last week could be linked to the Easter weekend robbery.

Mr O'Connor said: "I think that (the fire) probably was deliberate.

"I've never heard of an outage of electricity like that causing a fire that lasted as long as that.

As many as 70 safety deposit boxes – with a value estimated at £35million – were prized open by a gang of crooks, breaking into the vault at after disabling the alarms.
