Cost for continued Windows XP support said to double this year

If you're a part of a business that still uses Windows XP and has been paying Microsoft to offer continued support, get ready to shell out the big bucks

From Neowin:

Windows XP, in the minds of many, still remains the greatest operating system to ever grace the PCs of the world. Windows XP was indeed an excellent OS, but the software support for it ended last year after XP celebrated its 13-year anniversary. As a result, Microsoft only allows continued support for businesses for a fee, which is said to jump up sometime in April of this year.

As it stands, commercial users of Windows XP pay around $200 per PC annually to see software support for the now-retired OS, but in two months the cost of support is expected to jump to $400 per PC annually, with a possible cap of $500,000 for an entire business should the number of supported PCs exceed the half-million dollar mark. As of this moment, the annual cap sits at $250,000.

I don't think it's a matter of being the greatest or not. Some people would rather just stick to what works. Especially in the corporate environment where IT funding is minimal.

Being that security updates for Windows XP 32-bit are still free until 2019, it begs the question, what kind of support would anyone actually need pay for?

i liked XP when it was new but back then I was on dial up and downloading music , chat rooms , popcap games , and looking at pictures was cool, In most business they dont use computers for anything that requires much hardware acceleration so they could use any old computer and get by . Same was when XP came out many business was still on windows 98 and some home users but after awhile software vendors drooped it . Its the software vendors fault people dont drop these old O/S. Only 18.93% of computer users still use XP at all witch is a small percent out of a 100% But to Microsoft and manufactures of new computers that's a lot of money . So they want be happy tell there's only like 5% . If you can use XP and not catch a virus and it works for you and dont want to upgrade that's OK with me. But I'm more happy using modern O/S it suits my needs for this day and time better . :)

You mean free if you mod your OS and run the risk of BSOD your whole business, right? That doesn't sound like "just works and supported" in the slightest to me.

I have a feeling someone is actually going to get burned on this several times before they switch. After all, Windows Updates do enough damage to "supported" OS often enough.

I know this for a fact in some businesses they wont even buy and antivirus for there server ..They wait tell they catch a virus and pay and IT to clean it up with tools like malwarebytes . Something anyone who is not computer illiterate could do and not even go to school for it . After you pay and IT so many times you could have bought a corporate antivirus for your server . If they want buy an antivirus for there server and there multi millionaires because they own a business why would they upgrade there computers they just pay what ever when it breaks down. ;)
