Big news for Xbox One owners! Microsoft’s universal apps framework which allows developers to write code once and run it on Windows anywhere are coming to the console, according to a report by The Verge.

This May, Microsoft plans to release a SDK for all developers to build apps for the console alongside the ability to convert any retail Xbox One into a developer device. Right now, there is no public developer program for the Xbox One and only select groups are able to produce apps for it.

In addition to the new universal apps, Microsoft also plans to allow developers to run beta programs to test within the community and allow apps to run in the background so they can play music or perform other tasks.

As an Xbox One owner myself, this is great news. The console hasn’t received the wide range of apps I had expected it to get, but with Microsoft opening the SDK for all we should see an influx of apps.
