Microsoft and others pay to have ads go unblocked through Adblock Plus

If you’re a savvy internet user you’re probably using some sort of ad blocker (though hopefully not on your favorite sites). The most popular ad blocker is called AdBlock Plus, which boasts over 300 million downloads worldwide. That’s a lot of advertising dollars that are going unseen by internet users. Google, along with Amazon, Microsoft and Taboola, have decided to do something about it.

The Financial Times is reporting that these companies have paid AdBlock Plus to allow their ads to pass through the blocking software. AdBlock makes money by allowing companies to pay for their ads to go unblocked as long as they comply with AdBlock’s “acceptable ads” policy. It’s unclear whether Google and co. are simply abiding by this policy or just throwing money around to get their way.

Obviously a service such as AdBlock Plus is a big threat to Google, a company who makes a lot of money on online advertising. In 2013 Google even removed the AdBlock app from the Play Store. Everyone hates to see ads, but often times they are the only thing keeping a website alive. A lawsuit against AdBlock is currently being considered by the French Internet Advertising Bureau.

Last summer it was all over the News that some in Germany was trying to sue them because they got paid by those big companies. So unless you been out of touch or new you should know this.

All you have to is untick the box to not allow it its your choice or use ABE witch dont get paid.

Its been in there toss since 2011

Allowing acceptable ads in Adblock Plus

Adblock Plus • View topic - Allowing acceptable ads in Adblock Plus

If they was to put Adblocker Plus out of action there list easy list powers like 97% of adblockers . At lest there list is not closed source like ad guard and ad muncher list is.

Here's and article about it that dates back to February 21, 2013 so yes very old news .

Adblock Plus demands cash from websites to whitelist ads

The web would love to see no more ad blockers at all , they lose a lot of money from all of them . But you will never see ad guard make the news for it even there guilty of the same thing.

Unless they was to put ABP out of business .. because AG is not been downloaded 143 million downloads to date like ABP ether.

If they outlawed them I would just use Quick Java and block all images :P

Some people look at like its a good thing read here

Acceptable Ads Are Good For Everyone - The Future of Ads

But a lot small websites are mad at ABP because they cant afford to have there sites white listed

There was and update to this story here

//www.nsaneforums.com/topic/224451-abp-being-sued-for-blocking-ads/?hl=adblock+plus

Update to it was Dec 19, 2014 First court hearing of broadcasters and Adblock Plus

But the 2nd trial date in March and they expect it to go to high court. so it may be very long time tell its over.

The claims that the blocking technology was violating copyright law and the German Federal Data Protection Act still have to be evaluated by the Court, which announced it would decide the two cases on 25 March 2015. Additional cases in Germany are pending before the Courts of Cologne (Springer) and Hamburg (Die Zeit). With the March ruling, she would make one party unhappy, the judge said, and she did expect that the case would end up at higher court instances.

But the fact they do it, is just old news re wrote . :)

The web would love to see no more ad blockers at all , they lose a lot of money from all of them .

Dec 8, 2014 Internet giants wage war on pop-up ad blockers

Probably Goggle and Microsoft or companies in Germany re leaked the fact they do it to give them more bad press because they dont want to have to pay anymore . But they pay anyways if they dont pay money to be whitelisted they end up losing tons of money anyways because there ads are blocked. (They lose ether way. )

And the reason companies in Germany are taking them to court for them getting paid by Goggle and Microsoft is the fact it would do no good to take them to court for offering a free software that blocks ads it would never win that's there only case is the fact they get paid and if the companies in Germany win they may come after Ad Guard next you never know .

Adblock is just a fancy plugin/extension that blocks ads that it wants. Adblock edge also bypasses some websites. I've tried all of them but no ads or trackers can go through Ad Muncher . it's a free tiny 500kb software that is the best in class. it's also updated and they're not paid up by any company and there is no unobtrusive ads to let through. it also support all popular browsers.

I used AdMuncher for years as well, but since it never evolved to block ads in https streams even i had to abandon it for AdGuard...although AdGuard noticeably slows down the traffic and ludicrously inflates its stats its still better than nothing (which is largely what you get with AdMuncher now as a lot of traffic is going via https)

Theres also ublock https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/releases/latest for browser addons if you dont like AdBlock Edge

Well (scratches head) it's the same about trojans, virii and maleware, are they created by the same companies one pays to protect us from these naughty bytes!

Money is what makes the world go around, cash is King, it takes the sting out of being poor.

I don't use adblock plus, did in the past and I noticed it didn't hit the bulls-eye on all corners.

I am happy with Adguard since admuncher sold out.

Would not surprise me too if owners of admuncher got a pay off too.

Adguard has let in one pop-up in the month since I purchased it and it was a blank pop-up.

I wonder if those who compile the lists get paid to leave certain adverts and trackers off their lists.

They dont leave them off the list there on there they just whitelisted

What is this about?

Starting with Adblock Plus 2.0 you can allow some of the advertising not considered annoying to be viewed. By doing this you support websites that rely on advertising but choose to do it in a non-intrusive way.

Have you already signed our Acceptable Ads Manifesto?

Why is this feature enabled by default?

Unfortunately, this is the only way to accomplish the goals described above. But if the majority of Adblock Plus users have this function activated, advertisers will have the incentive to produce better ads.

But I hate all ads!

No problem, you can disable this feature at any time. To do so:

On Firefox: click the Adblock Plus icon and choose Filter Preferences from the menu. Uncheck "Allow non-intrusive advertising" and you are done.

How hard is it to uncheck a box ? If your using Adguard you have to opt out with acceptable ads or see ads ... They copy that idea from ABP.

Adguard is much worse they have acceptable ads in a shareware app . They try to get paid twice . :P

I'm using ublock ATM but I used admuncher for years, but I never had to pay for it . Why should I pay for them causing others on the internet to lose money ? I'm not. I used ABP before any of these like way back in Firefox v1.5 . Before I ever joined this site . They always gave it free and its still free with and option to opt out if you don't like no ads and don't want to help them out :)

Yes that's because Adblock edge depends on ABP to get its list updates You have to learn to make your own rules because it dont have rules to block everything you may want. As far as Ad muncher it dont work for https sites so you still will have those pesky ads on sites like Goggle and others .

With Adblock edge and ABP I always had a problem removing all those those pesky ads on Goggle It didn't always filter them . I always needed 2 ad blockers.. I was using Adblock edge with a new one called Adblock lite to remove all ads now that I switch to Ublock for Firefox I dont see no Goggle ads and only takes a fraction of the resource that it takes to run the other add-ons.

HTTPS support is going to be added to Ad Muncher version 5. most of the creepy websites that have ads all over the pages do not use HTTPS, however it is important to filter HTTPS ads too. i use Ad Muncher along with the help of Kaspersky internet security's anti-banner. when i look at the anti-banner's logs, i see there are many HTTPS ads blocked.

Dispite the comments above my thought remains the same :)

I wonder if those who compile the lists get paid to leave certain adverts and trackers off their lists.

Its worth noting that AdGuard uses adblock plus lists as well as its own.

I use adblock plus, I add my own lists as well....The simple fact is people try different softwares and finish up using the one they feel works best for them....We aren't salesmen here, no one is qualified to say mine is better than yours that's juvenile....BTW...AdBlock Lite also has the option to allow acceptable ads.

ABP is not bad it does OK to block ads but it has a serious problem This Just In: AdBlock Plus Still Uses a Lot of Memory
